Hermes delivers electrically in Magdeburg
The zero-emission delivery has been started by Hermes in Magdeburg. From now on, the Stadtfeld Ost and Altstadt areas will be served by cargo bikes and e-transporters. According to the company, two e-transporters and eight cargo bikes will be used in an area covering ten square kilometers - more than 1,200 shipments are to be handled per day and over 14 tons of CO2 saved. The delivery area extends from the Elbe in the east, Albert-Vater-Straße in the north, and Westring to Sudenburger Wuhne in the south. In addition to door-to-door deliveries to more than 30,000 residents of Magdeburg, the region's twelve parcel shops will also be served with zero emissions, according to Hermes.
The delivery base is located close to the city center. From there, the electrically assisted cargo bikes – six Cargobikes from Onomotion and two from Citkar – head directly out on their delivery routes and, according to Schnetgöcke, have very short distances to cover. For larger quantities of shipments going directly to parcel shops, the e-transporters are used. Only green electricity is consumed at the distribution center. The cargo bikes can transport up to 120 shipments per tour, and thanks to the proximity to the distribution center, a second delivery wave is possible.
“Magdeburg is another important step for us in the area of sustainability. From now on, we will deliver to more than 30,000 Magdeburg residents in the inner city with zero emissions. Making the last mile increasingly green is an essential matter for us," explained Harald Schnetgöcke, General Area Manager of the East region at Hermes Germany.
According to Schnetgöcke, it was important to implement the transition this year despite the concurrently challenging Christmas business. Since summer 2021, the parcel logistics company has already been focusing on zero-emission delivery in large parts of Berlin's inner city. The plan is to gradually extend this to other city centers.
