Health in the Fast Lane: How Modern Car Seats Protect Our Backs

"An ergonomic seat is the backbone of any comfortable and healthy journey," says Detlef Detjen, Managing Director of the Campaign for Healthier Backs (AGR) e.V.

Since 1995, the independent association has been awarding ergonomic products, including back-friendly car seats, with the AGR quality seal.

On average, Germans spend 9.2 hours a day sitting on weekdays - a large portion of which is in the car. 68% of German commuters use the car for their journey to work and spend - or better "sit" - up to 79 hours a year in traffic jams. "Switching to public transport or bicycles brings movement into everyday life and is good for the back.

However, if long car journeys are unavoidable, an ergonomic car seat can prevent back pain," emphasizes Detjen. For almost 30 years, AGR's medical expert panel has been awarding especially back-friendly car seats the AGR quality seal after comprehensive testing.

"In recent decades, leading car manufacturers have made significant strides in terms of ergonomics. Customer demand for back-friendly car seats is also on the rise. Many models now come with AGR-certified car seats as standard, and in some cases, even the rear-seat passengers can ride back-friendly," says Detjen.

The AGR quality seal serves as a professionally recognized standard for healthy car seats. Nevertheless, there are still seats that barely meet basic ergonomic requirements and can severely strain the back on longer journeys.

"It's not always easy for customers to immediately recognize the difference," says the AGR expert.

The AGR website (www.agr-ev.de/autositze) offers an overview of which car models are equipped with AGR-certified seats under which product name.

If your car doesn't have a back-friendly seat, you don't have to buy a new car: compatible Ergo seats can also be retrofitted into most used vehicles.

A Matter of Adjustment: Sit Correctly, Drive Relaxed

For a car seat to receive the "Tested and Recommended" seal of approval, it must meet many criteria. Minimum requirements include, among other things, an extendable seat surface, adjustable height and tilt, and a four-way lumbar support.

Seat dynamic systems with inflatable cushions provide lateral support in curves, comfort headrests relieve the cervical spine during rest breaks. Additional comfort features include electric seat adjustment, integrated massage function, and seat heating. Breathable materials ensure an optimal seating climate.

"Even the most back-friendly seat can only provide optimal support if it is correctly adjusted," emphasizes Detjen. "Many people do not fully utilize the available adjustment options when driving. Even a small adjustment can have a big impact."
