Hamburg/Moia: Combined on-demand and freight transport works
In a real-world laboratory as part of the EU project MOVE21, it was investigated from the end of March to the end of May in Hamburg over 44 working days to what extent city courier direct trips can be carried out in an environmentally friendly manner using on-demand mobility services. Courier personnel collected actual shipments from two participating social institutions – Hanseatic Help and Der Hafen Hilft – as well as private donors and delivered these shipments, which consisted of goods and clothing donations, free of charge to recipients within the Hamburg MOIA service area. A total of 153 tours were conducted and documented. There were 23 actual tours, and 130 additional courier trips were simulated.
The main route of each total distance was handled via the MOIA service offering with its more than 15,000 virtual stops in the Hamburg city area. Couriers covered the paths from the senders and recipients to the stops on foot in combination with package trolleys or carrying bags. "Box – the collection station," an open package station from Smart City | DB, was also used. In the event of an unsuccessful delivery, the goods could be stored there until a renewed delivery attempt was initiated by the courier.
Combined Passenger and Freight Transport
The mobility trial aims to test the simultaneous transport of people and goods. The intention is to use resources and capacities more efficiently, reduce climate and traffic burdens, promote social participation and inclusion, and network local actors. Within the framework of the pilot project, it was found that combined passenger and goods transport with on-demand mobility services is fundamentally possible.
There is a need for optimization for continuous operation
The evaluation also shows that there are optimization needs if such a project is to be implemented on a permanent basis. The evaluation can be found in the final report.
"European cooperation promotes innovations! Through close exchange with other cities, the innovative power of European metropolises is further strengthened. Only together can the management of the climate transition succeed," explained Liv Assmann, State Councilor and Plenipotentiary of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg to the Federal Government, the European Union, and for Foreign Affairs.
For Jan Kruska, Project Manager Micro Depots, Smart City | DB, the pilot project shows that open parcel stations like "Box – The Pick-up Station" are well suited to place central handover points for logistical goods traffic at the train station.
"In a smart city, mobility, logistics, and infrastructure are intelligently networked. Only in this way, and through committed partnership cooperation, can the vision of sustainable and community-oriented urban design become a reality," says Kruska.
From the perspective of Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economy and Innovation, the goal is to reduce CO2 emissions and traffic congestion in our city. To this end, there is a particular focus on rethinking logistics in the last mile and developing innovative solutions. In addition to emission-free vehicles and commercial cargo bikes, they also aim to integrate passenger and goods flows.
Translated automatically from German."If we want to actively shape the mobility transition, we have to try things out and gather experiences. Through the test run that has now been conducted, we have been able to determine that combined transports with already existing resources are fundamentally possible. This is an insight that we can build upon," explained Stefanie von Berg, District Office Manager of Altona.
