Hamburg deploys 25 Toyota Mirai taxis

In Hamburg, 25 fuel cell-powered Toyota Mirai have recently been put into service as taxis. The fleet of sedans was handed over by the car dealership S+K to Hamburg's largest taxi company, Best Taxi.

Toyota is already strong with taxis, and now they are ramping up with the Mirai: Carsten Schulz, Managing Director of Autohaus S+K GmbH, explains:

“Taxis are constantly in use and cover many kilometers every day. The hydrogen fuel cell drive is a particularly sustainable and practical solution that also helps improve air quality in the city.”

The "Zukunftstaxi" project started in 2021

In its second model generation, the Mirai offers a range of up to 650 kilometers and can be refueled in just a few minutes. Under its hood, a fuel cell converts hydrogen into electrical energy, which in turn powers a 130 kW/182 hp electric motor. As an emission, only water vapor is produced during driving.

In 2021, Hamburg began the "Zukunftstaxi" project to promote the transition to locally emission-free taxis. More than 350 electric taxis, including the 25 hydrogen-powered Mirai, are already operating in the city. This corresponds to a share of twelve percent.

Hamburg takes a step forward: No new combustion engine taxis from 2025

As of January 1, 2025, no new taxis with combustion engines will be allowed on the streets of Hamburg. This was announced in February by Hamburg's Green Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks. The Hanseatic city will thus become the first federal state to only allow taxis with alternative drives in two years.

What does this mean?

Interesting side note: Toyota is strong with taxis. The Mirai offers a lot of range, but it is expensive and has comparatively little space. However, it will provide interesting insights into fuel cell technology in everyday taxi use with its 25-unit implementation.
