GWG Munich: Mobility stations replace personal cars

The Munich housing association is linking the fields of housing and mobility and aims to replace private cars with special stations that include e-cargo bike rentals and car sharing.

GWG Städtische Wohnungsgesellschaft München has opened its second mobility station in a residential area. In Lochhausen, located on the outskirts of the state capital, GWG tenants can borrow an e-cargo bike, shopping trolleys, bike trailers, and more for free. A mobility chip is required for this. As an additional service, there is a bicycle repair station with all necessary tools. With the construction of the second phase, the mobility station will be expanded with STATTAUTO Munich's car-sharing service and combined with other mobility components, it was further announced.

“As a committed cyclist, I am pleased to inaugurate the next GWG mobility station here and to be the first to ride the e-cargo bike,” explained Verena Dietl, Mayor and GWG Supervisory Board Chairwoman.

Two years ago, the pilot project started on Bad-Schachener Straße in the Ramersdorf district. The first GWG mobility station has already been a complete success, which is why the model is now being expanded, added the GWG management, consisting of Christian Amlong and Gerda Peter. A GWG success model is gaining momentum. The two locations are intended only as the beginning of 20 additional planned rental stations in residential districts of GWG München. The goal is to make life without a private car easier, to create space for children, relaxation, and social gatherings instead of parking lots, as stated. Besides the sharing concept, they also aim to foster a sense of community among the tenants.

In addition to sustainable construction, mobility is part of the concept

Specific patrons, together with the GWG and a service company, are to take care of the maintenance of the facilities, a concept that has proven successful. The GWG projects are part of a new residential area at the outskirts of Lochhausen, with a total of approximately 460 apartments, several daycare centers, and shops. GWG is to contribute to the city of Munich's goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2030 or 2035. In addition to energy efficiency and sustainable heat supply, other areas of action such as alternative mobility offerings in the neighborhoods, the relevance of embodied energy in material selection, and the adaptation of properties to the consequences of climate change are also considered essential.
