Gruber Logistics delivers electrically over the Brenner Pass
The Brenner Corridor is one of the main traffic routes between Northern Italy and Central Europe and plays a crucial role in facilitating freight transport. However, the increase in freight traffic along the Brenner has put pressure on the existing infrastructure and increased environmental pollution. Roads, railways, and logistics centers along this route are often faced with demand that exceeds available capacities, and emissions are steadily rising. Therefore, on the one hand, infrastructural interventions are planned to facilitate the use of less burdensome means of transport; on the other hand, it is necessary to intervene with new solutions and ideas for decarbonizing the transport of heavy vehicles.
More Climate-Friendly Solutions
Gruber Logistics sees its main corridor in goods handling directly on the Brenner Axis. Especially in recent years, the company has intensified the so-called modal shift and moved 40 percent of the transported goods from road to rail. However, it will never be possible to completely eliminate freight traffic from the Brenner in the future, and it is therefore necessary to seek new decarbonization solutions.
“We pursue a technology-neutral approach and therefore do not rely on a single solution. The same diesel vehicles we use allow for a 12 percent reduction in emissions compared to the market average. We then regularly use biodiesel vehicles with a 60 percent reduction and biodiesel vehicles with a 90 percent reduction. The use of electric vehicles is a new step in this development. A potentially scalable solution without emissions,” explains Martin Gruber, CEO of the eponymous group.
The electric vehicles currently available on the market have limited autonomy. However, the idea is to modify the current logistics models by combining vehicles, drivers, and trailers, thus fully utilizing their capacity without negatively affecting operations. It is believed that for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, it is necessary not only to think in terms of technology and infrastructure but also, and above all, to rethink the logistics chain.
