Green Moves launches e-cargo bike sharing in Cologne

The Naturstrom subsidiary accelerates the concept with rental cargo bikes, thereby complementing the KVB's offering of space- and resource-saving transport means that make cars unnecessary in everyday life. At an affordable price.

With the Green Moves cargo bike, a new sharing service has now launched in Cologne. 15 electric cargo bikes are available for rent in four districts. The provider is a subsidiary of eco-energy supplier naturstrom AG, which operated the well-known public sharing service Donk-EE in Cologne from 2018 until the spring of 2023, when funding from the Federal Environment Agency was discontinued.

“Especially in inner cities, electric cargo bikes can replace many car trips. This applies to private individuals as well as businesses. With our sharing services, we offer them flexible mobility without having to bear the high acquisition costs. This is not only environmentally friendly but also space-saving," says Oliver Hummel, Managing Director of Green Moves.

The 15 e-cargo bikes are available in the districts of Ehrenfeld, Lindenthal, Innenstadt, and Südstadt. Currently, Green Moves operates urban sharing systems in cooperation with municipal transport companies, including the wupsiLastenRad in Leverkusen and the Kölner KVB cargo bike. The latter received the German Bicycle Award in the "Service & Communication" category in June 2023. The mobility service provider does not see its offer as competition to the KVB cargo bike.

“The Green Moves cargo bike is a useful addition to the KVB cargo bike, as we are present in neighborhoods where the KVB cargo bikes are not available – and vice versa. We also want to continue offering our previous Donk-EE customers a cargo bike at popular locations," explains Hummel.

After registering, users can see all available bikes in the Green Moves app. At 9 cents per minute, renting the cargo bikes is cheaper than comparable electric offerings, with a full day costing 27 euros. For comparison: the widely used, smaller and much cheaper-to-purchase scooters from various providers often cost 20 cents per minute.

For those with a permanent need, Green Moves offers the "Abo-Rad" concept in over 35 cities in NRW, providing a high-quality pedelec or e-cargo bike on a monthly full-service package. The company takes care of all necessary repairs as well as insurance.
