Green Hydrogen: Refueling Station in Prenzlau Launches

Eco-hydrogen from the Uckermark, the fueling station of the energy producer ENERTRAG supplies 750 kg of H2 daily, for refueling 25 buses or trucks. Expansion to 1,600 kg possible.

As of now, public transport buses, freight, and also individual vehicles can refuel with green hydrogen in Prenzlau, which is produced exclusively with renewable electricity from the region. The filling station of the German manufacturer Maximator has two compressor stages, allowing refueling at 350 and 700 bar for commercial vehicles and passenger cars. Initially, a daily capacity of 750 kg of hydrogen is available. This can refuel 25 buses or trucks – an expansion of the capacities to 1,600 kg daily is possible, according to the operator.

The first customers include the Uckermärkische Verkehrsgesellschaft buses retrofitted for hydrogen propulsion and the new Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell truck, which made a stop in Brandenburg earlier this week as part of a roadshow.

“For the city of Prenzlau, the H2 filling station and the gradual transition of public transport to alternative drive technologies are important impulses,” said Hendrik Sommer, Mayor of Prenzlau. “Especially the holistic concept with the planned use of the electrolysis waste heat by our municipal utility convinced us.”

The hydrogen filling station is the first building block of the Prenzlau Hydrogen Center. The plans for this include the installation of up to 13 megawatts of electrolysis capacity as well as the integration of a laboratory for quality control and opportunities for the development of new technologies.

“Green hydrogen must be used where its leverage is greatest and where it avoids the most carbon dioxide,” said ENERTRAG CEO Jörg Müller. “The establishment of further filling stations in the region and the use in the mobility sector are therefore obvious.”

At the official opening, Karina Dörk, District Administrator of the Uckermark district, expressed her delight at the commissioning of the latest H2 project. The District Administrator expects further projects to follow soon in Uckermark and Barnim, as the region offers “the best conditions to take on a pioneering role in the development of hydrogen technology.”
