Smartscooter with Battery Swap System

In 2011, a group of engineers, designers, and data scientists led by Horace Luke, the founder and CEO of Gogoro, began working on how to make electric driving a reality in the world's megacities.

Gogoro developed a battery swap system and electric scooters. The operating system of the scooters can, like the model in the automotive sector Tesla, be constantly updated. Through the use of the Sharing Economy service Coup by Bosch, the scooters have been available on the market since 2016 in many German cities such as Berlin, Munich, and Tübingen.

Battery swap stations expected to surpass gas station network this year

The gas station network in Taiwan currently has 2,487 stations. Electric scooter manufacturer Gogoro Inc. expects that this year, the number of its electric battery swap stations will exceed the number of gas stations in the nation after seven years of operation. By the end of 2021, Gogoro had built its 2,215 swap stations nationwide, primarily in urban areas. Now the company plans to add battery stations in more rural areas.

“By the end of this year, we are very confident that the number of battery swap stations will surpass the number of gas stations nationwide," said Gogoro Vice President of Energy Services, Alan Pan.

As of January 18, 2022, 10 AM, subscribers of the Gogoro network in Taiwan alone had swapped 253,408,970 batteries via GoStations, which averages out to a swap per day. Together, the riders have driven 4,633,975,952 kilometers.

Global Cooperation

Gogoro has partnered with global scooter manufacturers such as Yamaha, PGO, Aeon Motor, CMCs eMOVING, eReady and ADATA in Taiwan, Hero MotoCorp  in India and Yadea and DCJ in China. The Taiwanese manufacturer is already very active in the European market. At the start of sales in the USA, Chief Product Officer Peng Ming-i could not yet make a commitment.

What does this mean?

The battery packs are swapped out in seconds, and Gorogo charges a monthly fee for providing always-charged batteries. The Taiwanese also promise to repurpose weakened batteries for use in street lamps or parking meters. This is how sustainable mobility can work.
