GM starts pre-series of GMC Hummer and Cadillac Lyriq

GM starts the pre-series production of its electric models. Meanwhile, the pre-series production of the electric GMC Hummer has begun at the Detroit Hamtramck plant. It will also enter series production by the second quarter of 2022.

Mark Reuss, President of General Motors, is proud of his latest baby and stated on the LinkedIn platform:

"Fifteen months ago, we announced a $2 billion investment in Spring Hill to build fully electric vehicles. Our teams have worked tirelessly on the Lyriq, launched it nine months earlier than planned, and worked in parallel to retrofit the facility and start production."

He also posted a Lyriq on the final assembly line in Spring Hills. Cadillac had presented the production version of the E-SUV Lyriq, built on the "Ultium" electric platform that Honda will also use, in April 2021 – at that time still as a production-near study. In September 2021, reservations were opened in the USA and closed again within minutes because the limited "Debut Edition" was sold out. Reuss does not yet specify an exact delivery date, but it can be assumed that the first production models will reach customers in the second quarter of 2022.

In November 2021, Cadillac started presales in China, where the model will be produced locally by the GM-SAIC joint venture. Furthermore, mid-term sales in other markets are also planned – including Europe. However, there are no concrete details or prices yet. The GMC Hummer, on the other hand, is likely to be reserved for the USA and some selected markets – its design is too specific.

What does this mean?

GMC and Cadillac are entering the electric age and relatively little time has passed between announcement and series production. The Cadillac Lyriq would also be an interesting model for Europe – the sooner it arrives, the better – as the market is increasingly offering alternatives.
