Geotab supports SRTI initiative with traffic data for increased safety
The globally operating provider of IoT and connected transportation solutions, Geotab, has joined the "Data for Road Safety" (DFRS) initiative, which aims to improve driver behavior in traffic. The initiative's goal is to reduce the number of accidents on European roads and achieve a future without fatalities. With daily evaluations of 2.5 million vehicles worldwide and 40 billion data points, the data specialist believes that real-time analysis can provide valuable insights for a future without traffic deaths.
“Every traffic fatality is one too many. We firmly believe that technology and data-driven insights play a crucial role in reducing the number of traffic fatalities among drivers, passengers, and pedestrians over the next few years or even eliminating them entirely," explains Christoph Ludewig, Vice President, Europe OEM at Geotab, on the initiative.
Data for Road Safety has developed an ecosystem for safety-related traffic information (SRTI) that warns drivers about dangerous driving conditions. As an open and transparent system, SRTI data can be shared and utilized by all participating members of the ecosystem, outlines the provider. This includes vehicle manufacturers, service providers, and road traffic authorities. Members of Data for Road Safety are convinced that - regardless of the car brand driven or the navigation system used - traffic safety information can help the public and private partners make better-informed decisions, potentially saving lives, it further states.
More Safety through Data Analysis
Ludewig points to the wealth of experience in data analytics that could provide real added value to the SRTI group. This includes real-time data on vehicle performance, driving and traffic patterns, and relevant environmental factors. By joining the SRTI group, Geotab can share knowledge and insights with partners in the automotive industry and traffic sector. Ludewig sees traffic safety as a crucial component of Geotab's data-driven analytical telematics solution.
“Data is essential for analyzing road traffic safety, and the data space of DFRS for mobility data is crucial in this. Geotab's membership in DFRS will be especially valuable when it comes to figuring out how we can make our roads safer and more accessible for everyone who uses them," says Joost Vantomme, Chairman of DFRS and CEO of ERTICO ITS Europe.
The Data for Road Safety ecosystem includes EU member states and traffic supervisory authorities, in Germany, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). In addition, service providers such as HERE Europe B.V., TomTom Traffic B.V., INRIX, and Geotab, as well as automotive suppliers like NIRA Dynamics and automobile manufacturers such as the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), BMW AG, Ford Motor Company, Mercedes Benz AG, and Volvo Cars are members."
