GAC Aion V: Launch in Europe

GAC is coming to Europe: And wants to compete with the second generation of the Aion V, which is taking the right path: It is noticeably smaller than its predecessor!

Finally, finally a brand is reversing the constant growth: The second generation of the Aion V is noticeably shorter and narrower than its predecessor. It measured 4,650 x 1,920 x 1,720 mm with a wheelbase of 2,830 mm. The second generation shrank to 4,605 x 1,854 x 1,686 mm in the basic variant, while the better-equipped versions with Lidar are 1,876 mm wide. The wheelbase also shrank a bit – to 2,775 mm. Yet, thanks to its angular character, there is still enough space inside – even for sleeping, if you fold down all the seats and put in a mattress.

Three battery sizes - later with exchange function

In China, the base version delivers 150 kW and 240 Nm of torque, while the top version also only manages 165 kW with the same torque. Both models are said to accelerate to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds. All of this sounds very "right-sized". In the basic variant, the Aion V uses a 62-kWh battery for up to 520 km range according to the CLTC standard. Realistically, you should expect more like 300 kilometers minus x. That's why there are also versions with 75 and 90 kWh, which should go significantly further, according to CLTC 650 and 750 km respectively. We expect 400 and 500 km respectively. Fast charging works well: after 15 minutes, up to 250 km can be recharged at DC stations, which indicates a peak of 150 kW.

The version with Lidar sensors, however, is only offered with the middle-sized 75-kWh battery. Interesting: According to CN EV Post, there will also be a "battery-swappable variant" later. To this end, an agreement was signed with Nio. The goal here is likely to be to establish a "standard" with combined forces that others should or must follow.

In China, prices start at just under 16,500 euros

Visually, the new model takes a new direction - towards more practicality: The body is designed more upright and angular, providing more interior space with less external space requirement. The headlights with H-shaped graphics are somewhat reminiscent of Hyundai, but overall the Aion V stands out subtly from most other competitors. Interesting in this class is the LiDAR sensor on the roof, because in China the Aion V is discreetly priced: The second generation Aion V is priced at 129,800 to 189,800 Yuan, which corresponds to about 16,450 to 24,050 euros. In Europe, a base under 30,000 euros would be desirable.

Inside, the Aion V presents itself as reduced like Nio and Co with a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system in landscape format along with a "command bridge" of a center console. The equipment in China is ample: There are electrically adjustable front seats with eight-point massage with memory, heating, and ventilation. Practical is the sleeping function, which GAC actively advertises: You can fold down all the seats. Mattress on top – and sleep. There is also a panoramic sunroof, a refrigerator and a warmer in the center console, foldable tables on the backrests of the front seats.

In terms of safety, they really step up: With a navigation-based driving assistant (NDA), adaptive cruise control (ACC), 360-degree camera system, and remote parking assistant.

This is well received: According to Car News China, GAC Aion received more than 100,000 orders for the electric SUV within an hour and 20 minutes of its market launch. The Aion V will also be assembled at the GAC plant in the province of Rayong, which could help bypass tariffs in Europe.

What does this mean?

The Aion V scores with "rightsizing" in terms of package and price – and could thus carve out a niche in Europe, as a kind of "super Fiat Panda." We are excited!
