GAC Aion Hyper GT: Top aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of 0.19

The Chinese plans are ambitious: GAC is also rolling out new electric vehicles and is creating premium sub-brands for this purpose. In this case, Aion stands for the New Energy Vehicles and Hyper is the sub-brand under which several models are to be launched. Thus, the GAC Aion Hyper GT is the second model from Hyper after the Hyper SSR sports car, and it is always important for GAC to achieve superlatives.

The SSR is said to sprint to 100 km/h in 1.9 seconds, and the Hyper GT now comes with a drag coefficient of only 0.19. The technical basis for the Hyper GT is the GAC platform AEP 3.0, on which the aforementioned Hyper SSR is also built. The platform presented in November is already the third version of an electric architecture introduced in 2017. In terms of data, GAC Aion has so far only revealed a few details about the base version of the Hyper GT: It has only one electric motor with 250 kW system power and 434 Newton meters of torque; it is expected to reach 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

GAC has not yet announced the exact dimensions, but if you take the Nio ET7 or Mercedes EQE as a benchmark, you are surely on the right track. From the XPeng P7 Wing Edition, we know the butterfly doors up front and from Nio the Lidar sensors for detecting obstacles. GAC offers two variants: One with a Lidar sensor on the roof and two on the sides, and the other with only a roof Lidar.

The Aion Hyper GT can communicate with weather satellites

In addition, a "Fengyun-III satellite infrared remote sensing technology" is said to be installed, meaning that people and animals can be detected even in poor visibility. The Fengyun-3 satellites are weather satellites equipped with infrared instruments. However, how obstacles on the road are to be detected with this remains unclear.

Reservations for the Hyper GT are already being taken, but sales are not expected to begin until the end of 2023 or early 2024, so probably only after the Hyper SSR super sports car, which is slated to go on sale in October 2023.

What does that mean?

GAC is also making great strides: By 2030, the company plans to sell over 1.5 million cars under the GAC Aion brand. This would be a fivefold increase compared to 2022, when around 271,000 units were brought to market. GAC started with the models Aion V, Aion S, Aion Y, and Aion LX. Going forward, the plan is to introduce at least two new models each year; additionally, GAC-Aion CEO Gu Huinan aims to drive internationalization, and an introduction of the brand in Europe is not ruled out.
