From cargo bike to drone: Four startups take off at HOLM

With Mäx & Mäleon, Goldfinch, Layover Solutions, and PRIOjet, four new companies are starting the 2-year support program at the Start-up Lab Frankfurt. Three times software, once hardware: a personal cargo bike.

The three Hessian startup companies Goldfinch, Layover Solutions, and Mäx & Mäleon as well as PRIOjet from Hamburg have moved into their new location in the House of Logistics and Mobility in Frankfurt (HOLM) and are thus starting the two-year funding program of the in-house startup accelerator.

“We look forward to the next two years with the four promising startups and to their innovative ideas for the logistics and mobility of tomorrow. With our strong partner network, we will actively support the young companies in their development and accompany them on their way to market readiness,” stated Sascha Barthel, Head of Innovation and Network Management at HOLM GmbH.

The four companies focus their business ideas on solving problems in various areas of logistics and mobility, the institute stated. They represent the great diversity of challenges that exist in the industries, which are also reflected in HOLM's startup funding.

Instead of a Car: A Cargo Bike for People and Goods

The goal of the Frankfurt startup Mäx & Mäleon is to make urban individual transport more sustainable. To this end, the young team has developed a variable multi-person pedelec with the "Person-Load-Bike," which combines the environmental friendliness and fun of riding a bicycle with the flexible usage possibilities of a car. The flexible and robust construction and equipment also make the vehicle attractive for delivery traffic and sharing offers.

Software for Fleet Integration of Drones

The start-up Goldfinch from Lich in Hesse offers software that supports suppliers in integrating drones into their fleet. With this product, the company bridges the gap between drone manufacturers and the logistics industry, ensuring the safe and reliable use of a CO2-neutral means of transport.

The start-up Layover Solutions, originally from Hofheim am Taunus, aims to simplify the analog, cost- and time-intensive processes behind booking accommodation, meals, and transportation for passengers affected by flight disruptions through a digital booking platform and AI-supported decision aids. It is the first project to comprehensively digitize passenger-related layover management.

The Hamburg-based logistics start-up PRIOjet offers with its software-as-a-service product PRIOjet Logistics a platform to initiate, organize, process, and invoice orders for very time-critical international shipments with on-board couriers. Emergency logistics orders can thus be processed faster, safer, and more cost-effectively for all involved.

Application process and final pitch

The decision for the four start-ups was made on September 9, 2021, by jury decision, following an extensive application process that ended with the final pitches of the top 6 applicants. Members of the expert jury were Thea Wiedemann (Mobility, Logistics, Inland Shipping Advisor at the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport and Housing), Alexander Laukenmann (Aviation Business Unit Manager at Fraport AG), Axel Marschall (Partner at Infront Consulting & Management GmbH), Michael Rüffer (Managing Director of Technology and Operations/Railway Operations Manager at Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main mbH) and HOLM Managing Director Michael Kadow.

Startup assistance for young companies like sigo or Wingcopter

Since 2017, HOLM's start-up support has been helping young companies in the logistics and mobility sectors with a two-year support program. The support includes providing office and event spaces, access to the industry network, mentoring, and participation in networking and scene events. Since its inception, more than a dozen young companies have been supported on their journey. In addition to new admissions, Green Convenience, MYTIGATE, Rail-Flow, and Rodenstein are currently using the start-up lab. Among the most prominent alumni are CAPHENIA in the field of synthetic fuels, the Frankfurt logistics start-up CargoSteps, the cargo bike sharing provider sigo, and the drone company Wingcopter.
