The truck manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will equip its first production-ready electric truck, the eActros, with the fully electric cooling technology from the Thermo King brand Frigoblock. This is intended to provide more range security. As Frigoblock, the manufacturer of transport refrigeration units, reports, both companies had already cooperated closely beforehand and jointly pursued the goal of offering customers sustainable cooling technology that seamlessly works with the new Mercedes-Benz eActros vehicles.

Ingo Kaltwasser is responsible as Chassis OEM Manager at Frigoblock in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He reports:

“We have closely collaborated with the engineering teams of Mercedes-Benz Trucks to customize the Frigoblock technology and meet the exact energy needs of the new eActros vehicle. This project builds on our decades-long relationship with Daimler and we are proud to enable the industry to take another step towards CO2-neutral refrigerated transport.”

The electric Frigoblock refrigeration units are based on integrated inverter technology and can operate directly with battery-powered vehicles. This reduces the number of energy-consuming components. The battery capacity of the vehicles is better utilized, which in turn benefits the range of the truck.

To meet the electrical requirements of the new eActros, Frigoblock has developed a new CAN bus gateway system for direct communication between the truck and the refrigeration system. The control manages the machine's energy demand but only requires as much energy as is necessary to maintain the target temperature. For additional safety, the manufacturer describes, the revised CAN gateway system ensures that the refrigeration unit shuts down automatically in the event of an electrical emergency.

"The newly designed CAN communication opens the door to advancements in sustainable, electric transport cooling," said Ingo Kaltwasser. "With improved communication capabilities and intelligent route planning, the refrigeration unit can help to increase the range of the electric vehicle in the future and make this sustainable, CO2-neutral cold chain logistics solution even more operationally efficient."
