Framo: Fuel-Cell Truck this year

The prototype of a fuel cell truck from Thuringia is expected to be completed by 2021. However, it is still unclear when and where the 26-ton truck could be put into practical use.

The Thuringian E-truck converter Framo has announced its first electric truck with hydrogen propulsion for this year, 2021. The Thuringian company, which specializes in the conversion of trucks, expects to gain a technical lead in future mobility from this step. The medium-sized company has been researching, developing, and working for years; "now we are ready," says Ralf Binnenbruck, CTO of Framo.

“The specialized know-how of our employees and the continuity in the development work of our engineers make these results possible.”

As a conversion company, Framo has been focusing on e-mobility in the heavy-duty sector for some time now, relying on small series. The portfolio includes municipal waste collection trucks, electrically powered concrete mixers, and eTrucks with refrigeration units in the range of 7.5 to 60 tons. Customers include, among others, the supermarket chain Aldi, the railway logistics company DB Schenker, and municipalities.

However, according to Framo, electromobility in heavy-duty transport has its strengths in short and medium distances. With the new generation of hydrogen trucks, they now aim to offer a solution for long-distance transport. Here, hydrogen technology in the form of a fuel cell is considered the future of mobility. It significantly reduces weight, thus increasing the truck's payload capacity. At the same time, the trucks' range increases. Serhat Yilmaz, a member of the management team responsible for marketing, business development, investor relations, and sales, believes that the market is enormous.

“We offer 100 percent emission-free mobility for the transportation of goods. This will have to be a central component of the energy transition and part of a sustainable economic system,” believes Yilmaz.

The prototype, which is to be presented later this year, is a 26-tonner whose basic structure, according to the Framo principle, can be specialized with modular extensions for numerous niches. According to the company, it is in talks with several major partners about closer cooperation.

“Combining our expertise in conversion with the series strength of a large corporation can make sense for both sides,” explains Serhat Yilmaz.
