Frame Breaks: Authorities Halt Trade with Babboe E-Cargo Bikes

The sale of Babboe cargo bikes has been suspended by order of Dutch authorities due to safety deficiencies. "The safety of the cargo bikes is inadequately guaranteed," stated the NWWA, the regulatory authority for food and goods. The Dutch company must also recall bikes from eight models. The company declared on Friday in Amersfoort, upon request, that it is working closely with the authorities.

The trade in Germany is also affected: The company has decided as a precaution to temporarily halt the sale of all Babboe cargo bikes, as stated on its German website. According to the company, it is the market leader for cargo bikes in Europe.

The Dutch TV station RTL was the first to report significant safety deficiencies. There have been numerous reports that bike frames broke without external impact. The authority accuses the company of not reporting the deficiencies. Additionally, the cause of the defects has not been adequately investigated, and no measures have been taken. It is currently under investigation whether criminal proceedings should be initiated.
