At least nine events in weekly intervals, all top drivers of Formula E, spectacular city courses such as Monaco or Hong Kong: Formula E wants to use the worldwide racing break for an adventure in the virtual world. The kickoff is on Saturday (April 18) at 4:30 PM. The test race and the entire show will be broadcast live on the official website of Formula E, among others. Unlike other simulator series, only drivers from the Formula E world will start in the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge.

Not based on the Formula E mode, but for a good cause

And it's for a good cause: In its partnership with the United Nations Children's Fund UNICEF, Formula E supports the global campaign against COVID-19. The system of the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge has nothing to do with the normal Formula E mode and is as simple as it is exciting. After a single lap in qualifying, the drivers compete against each other in a so-called "Race Royale": After each lap, the last car drops out until only the top ten remain. Points are awarded according to the well-known Formula E system, including for pole position and the fastest race lap. The game rFactor2 is the basis.

"Formerly a toy, now like a racing car"

Preparations in Kempten, Bavaria and São Paulo, Brazil are already in full swing: Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi are creating the technical conditions to be ready to start on Saturday afternoon. “It used to be a toy, now the simulator is like my racing car,” says Daniel Abt, who is setting up all the equipment at home these days. “So now I'm a racing driver, mechanic, and engineer all in one.”

“These are hard times for everyone. It's nice that we can offer our fans a bit of action and fun with this idea from Formula E,” says Lucas di Grassi, who has been an UN ambassador for clean air since 2018.

And he adds: “We are giving our all to offer a good show and at the same time doing something for a good cause – a perfect combination.”

Around the virtual action on the track, there will be a show hosted by Nicki Shields and commentators Jack Nicholls and Dario Franchitti. Formula E will broadcast the kickoff of the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge live on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch as well as the website www.fiaformulae.com.  Valentin Hein/jr
