Dennis was able to "relax" and drive away at the front on Sunday: His main rivals - Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy knocked each other out of the race, so - unexpectedly - Norman Nato in the Nissan and Sam Bird for Jaguar completed the podium.
There was also a spectacular crash on Sunday - but without major consequences
But Sunday wasn't crash-free either: Already in lap 2, Evans lost control while braking, slid into the rear of Cassidy, and then went airborne over Cassidy's left rear wheel, from where he landed on the Envision. Both vehicles managed to reach the pits, behind them several minor rear-end collisions occurred – but this time the race only had to be briefly interrupted.
At the front, Bird put pressure on Dennis, he countered. During his first attack mode, Bird fell to fourth place behind Buemi - Dennis and Nato were faster: Both rejoined the track ahead of Bird. Following the leader were Buemi, Mortara, and Günther. Towards the end, the whole race calmed down: Dennis remained comfortably ahead of Nato and Bird. Once again, it was evident that the Porsche and Jaguar engines run much more efficiently than the Nissan power units: While Dennis calmly secured his victory, Bird put massive pressure on Nato's Nissan but still couldn't get past. Bird finished third ahead of Mortara, Buemi, Günther, and Wehrlein.
In the end, Dennis takes the lead in the overall classification
After the race weekend in Rome, Dennis took the lead in the drivers' standings and, with 195 points, is 24 points ahead of second-placed Cassidy. He is followed by Mitch Evans with 151 points and Wehrlein with 146. Jean-Eric Vergne, in fifth place with 107 points, no longer has any title chances. Max Günther is now in sixth place with 101 points, bringing Maserati level with "mother" DS in the drivers' standings after a weak start.
Envision was able to expand its lead with 239 points among the teams. It is followed by Porsche with 239 points, just behind is Jaguar TCS Racing with 228 points. In fourth place is Avalanche Andretti with 218 points. Thus, the top four positions are dominated by Porsche and Jaguar drives. "Best of the Rest" are Stellantis subsidiaries DS (153 points) and Maserati (130). Behind them are the two Nissan teams with McLaren (86) and Nissan itself (79), ahead of Nio (34), Mahindra (33), and Cupra (17). The final "Double-Header" of the 2023 season will take place on July 29 and 30 in London.
What does this mean?
There are still frequent spectacular crashes on the tight Formula E tracks. Notable this year is the efficiency of the drives, as nearly all brands appear in pairs in the standings: Jaguar is 1st and 3rd, Porsche 2nd and 4th, Stellantis 5th and 6th. Then follows Nissan in 7th and 8th, Nio 9th, and the last positions are held by the two teams with Mahindra engines.
