The commercial vehicle manufacturer Ford has announced the presentation of the Transit Electric for November 12, 2020, intending to reveal the technical details of the model. However, the heavy e-transporter is reportedly set to actually hit the market at the beginning of 2022. Originally, the launch was planned for 2021, but this has apparently been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, they believe they are still on time because customers are increasingly discovering the advantages of "green delivery," according to a press release. According to a representative Google survey, the number of customers concerned about the environmental friendliness of deliveries is significantly rising in key markets like the USA, the UK, and Germany. In all three markets, zero-emission vehicles are preferred over combustion models, but only by a narrow majority, and only if price and punctuality are identical. A slim minority would also be willing to wait a bit longer if the goods are delivered by an e-transporter.
Technically, the propulsion and battery package represents a unique Ford solution that began years ago and should be considered independent of the cooperation with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The production of the VW e-Crafter remains unaffected. The cooperation focuses on the use of the Modular Electrification Toolkit primarily for passenger cars and possible electrically driven successor models between the Transit Custom and Transit Connect, possibly related to the ID.Buzz Cargo. This model will be positioned in the segment between the VW Caddy Cargo and the Transporter T6.1 as a fully electric and partially autonomous driving model. In the cooperation, VW is responsible for the city van and Ford for the development of a new 2.8-tonner. The responsibility for the successor series in the 3.5-ton segment is reportedly not yet finally decided.
