Ford Transit Custom: Starting in 2023, also fully electric

Things are moving quickly at Ford: The Transit Custom is doing its final laps, which is set to come not only as an internal combustion engine and hybrid but also as a pure electric variant. And it is supposed to succeed the T6.1 at the cooperation partner VW.

The van manufacturer Ford has officially announced the launch of the Transit Custom for next year - and already, the first test mules of the new compact van in the 3.0-ton segment have been caught on camera in Southern Europe. While initial models were based on the current design, the latest scoops show vehicles built on the upcoming platform that Ford is also developing for its cooperation partner Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. However, as before, there will also be a diesel version with a Ford Eco-Blue engine, as well as a plug-in hybrid (possibly with the VW system instead of the current and less convincing Ford range extender solution) and a mild hybrid with the familiar 48-volt components. Only the pure electric version is truly new to the lineup. In this regard, it is likely to set new benchmarks in terms of performance, power, and charging technology, leveraging the e-drive technology from the E-Transit. If the manufacturer takes cues from the larger E-Van, which is rolling out this year, it could at least offer the lower power setting of the rear-wheel electric drive, providing 135 kW of power and 430 Nm of torque, which is more than sufficient.

The range should exceed the 320 kilometers of the larger sister model if the manufacturer retains the 68 kW net battery capacity for the smaller model. The charging technology should also be carried over, meaning 11 kW in AC and 115 kW in DC. The latter should enable an 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes. Another fixed feature will likely be the ability to use the electric van as a 2.3 kW power outlet. Additionally, the 160,000-kilometer warranty on high-voltage components and the modern Sync4 infotainment systems, including telematics, will likely secure their place in the "mid-range" segment.

Speaking of a leap: Reportedly, the new Transit Custom, once again built at the Ford factory in Kocaeli, Turkey, will also replace the T6.1 from partner Volkswagen in the medium term. The T6.1 is currently selling excellently, not only as a "California" camper but also as a spacious, though purely conventionally Euro6D-Diesel-powered, commercial vehicle. Only car customers can opt for the T7 Multivan, but they do not have the choice of a pure BEV, only a range-limited plug-in hybrid model. Anyone wanting a pure electric vehicle in the mid-size category will have to wait for the successor, which in the basic version should again offer around 6 cubic meters of cargo space. Alternatively, one could settle for 4 cubic meters of space and order the smaller ID.Buzz, which will be launched in the fall, based on Volkswagen's MEB electric car platform.

From a design perspective, the first heavily camouflaged prototypes of the combustion engine version indicate that the aesthetics should work for both brands. Notable at the front is a continuous LED light strip, which seems to be a general trend. The slightly sloping roofline towards the rear with a "break-off edge" at the rear wing doors suggests improved aerodynamics, while the relatively short wheelbase with decent overhangs promises a compact turning circle. A long version is also likely. In general, the vehicle's height could once again drop below the two-meter mark.

What does this mean?

The Custom will also be the new VW T6.1 successor - which can be seen in detail. Just as VW has discreetly styled the Caddy to look like a Ford, the future Transit Custom’s design will also subtly take cues from VW.
