Ford starts series production of the Explorer in Cologne
The automaker Ford has started mass production of its first electric car, which is set to roll off the assembly line in large numbers in Europe. After the start on Tuesday morning, the first vehicle was to be ceremoniously handed over to a customer in the afternoon. The production start was originally scheduled for last September, but preparations took longer due to a new battery standard.
From 2013 to 2018, Ford produced an electric version of the Focus in Saarland, but only in small quantities and without significant success. The new car is going into mass production, and the Cologne plant has a capacity of 250,000 electric vehicles per year. In addition to the compact SUV that has now begun production - the Ford Explorer - a second electric car is also set to be manufactured in the cathedral city.
The US corporation has been present on the Rhine since 1930, where it has produced, among other things, the small car classic Ford Fiesta. Production of this car was discontinued last year, as it had to make way for the new electric car. For its new electric course, Ford has invested nearly two billion euros in the Cologne plant. In terms of electromobility, the automaker is late to the party, with competitors far ahead. Ford is hoping for high sales of its new electric vehicle. However, the demand for electric cars has recently developed poorly in the overall market.
