Fiat Grande Panda: The Panda shows a whole new size

In addition to Opel, Fiat is also celebrating its 125th anniversary – and is gifting itself with a new Panda – the Grande Panda. Which will start an entire family!

The Grande Panda is also fundamentally based on the STLA Smart, which is now an evolution of the well-known CMP Smart Car platform, because: In the electric versions, the battery is now integrated into the vehicle floor, while in the original version, parts of the battery are installed above the rear axle. It is evident that Stellantis CEO Tavares does not let things rest and platforms are NEVER "fully developed." Continuous evolution is meant to make the company fit for the future.

The Panda Bear Founds a Family

That's why Fiat is rethinking the Panda from the ground up: Unlike its frugal predecessors, it is supposed to be the progenitor of an entire "Panda Bear Family" that, in the long run, will also replace the 500 X and Tipo. It will be interesting to see how this is received in Italy, where the Panda has held the top spot in sales figures for years, simply because it is small and affordable enough for the majority of Italians. Not much more is needed, but more is what they will get: Because the new model, as the "Grande Panda," stretches out to 3.99 meters and visually refers back to the original model. From previous Fiat events, we know how difficult it was to bring the Panda into the future: Too boxy would be retro, too small wouldn't do either, as there's hardly any demand or margin outside Italy, and too futuristic wouldn't work…

They have now decided on a new crossover size

Visually, they have fortunately stayed very close to the study shown in February – accordingly, the other Pandas are likely to follow these vehicles as well. And as mentioned, the Panda family will expand robustly and off-road: With extended fenders, 17-inch wheels plus x. And of course, a hint of its lineage shows through in the proportions…

And naturally, the Grande Panda will also launch as an electric and hybrid model. Therefore, we expect the E-Grande-Panda to have 83 kW / 113 PS and 125 Nm of torque, while the hybrid is likely to come with 74 kW/100 PS. The new model also visually quotes the original Panda with asymmetrical lettering and is likely to take a big step towards "New Clever," similar to what Citroën C3 and Opel Frontera are already practicing. The base will probably make use of a smartphone for infotainment, there might be removable speakers, and surely a lot of recycled materials used inside.

The Panda is likely to be planned as the new world car - outside of Asia

The Grande Panda will be followed by additional versions, which Fiat could market globally, including in South America, which is why they already showed a pick-up in February. The Middle East and at least North Africa are also on their radar. The slick Fastback-CUV could replace the Tipo, and the Grand Grande could replace the Fiat 500 L, which also came as a seven-seater. And since it has already been "panda-pimped" so much, a minivan with a camper could be the largest expansion stage.

It will be interesting to see how Fiat positions the Grande Panda price-wise: Because the Topolino is positioned "above" the Ami – it could well be that the Panda is positioned between the Citroën C3 and Opel Frontera. This would mean around 25,000 euros for the electric version and around 16,000 for the base gasoline hybrid.

What does this mean?

Fiat has long struggled with replacing the Panda: In Italy, the car is extremely important, but otherwise, only the 500 and Ducato currently represent "Fiat," which is why they are now moving forward boldly: Fiat is crafting subfamilies from both the 500 and 600 as well as from the Panda. What’s crucial is that Fiat’s shrunken range starts to expand again, gains definition, and triggers "must-have" reflexes. Something that Tipo, Doblo, and others have not quite managed. In July, we will get to take a test seat in Lignotto.
