Ferrari and Enel X: New Energy Community

Ferrari has signed an agreement with Enel X to establish a photovoltaic system for a new renewable energy community in the cities of Fiorano and Maranello. A PV system on a decommissioned area at the Fiorano test track is to generate electricity for the communities and serve as a base for additional partners.

The Ferrari Energy Community will be the first Renewable Energy Community (REC) in Italy to be promoted and supported by an industrial company for the benefit of the region. The project involves the installation of a photovoltaic system with a capacity of about 1 MWp by December 2023 on a 10,000 square meter disused plot of land at the Fiorano racetrack. The energy generated there will be made fully available to the local population.

The Ferrari PV system is intended to be a starting point

Any public or private institution in Fiorano and Maranello can become a member of the Ferrari REC: citizens, institutions, companies, and factories can use the generated renewable energy or play the important role of a prosumer of renewable energy. "If they install or connect their own power generation systems, for example on their own roofs, they can maximize the benefits for themselves and the community and increase the positive impacts of the project on the area," Ferrari states somewhat clumsily. Fundamentally, it’s about achieving a certain level of energy autonomy for the communities (and ultimately also for Ferrari itself). The renewable energy community, which is operated with solutions from Enel X, includes in this case bifacial high-performance photovoltaic panels. Ferrari hopes for both ecological and socio-economic impacts from this.

The new facility in Fiorano is expected to generate an average of about 1,500 MWh over a period of 20 years, saving around 450 tons of CO2 emissions per year. Economically and socially, the new energy community is expected to offer its members significantly lower energy costs. Ferrari's CEO, Benedetto Vigna, explains:

“Sustainability is a priority for us: we not only want to be climate neutral by 2030, but also be a catalyst for broader change.”

He adds:

“The Ferrari Energy Community is a concrete example of the possible synergy between an industry and the community in which it operates. The model can bring significant benefits to the Italian energy supply. Due to its scalability and replicability, it can accelerate the decarbonization process while reducing energy costs for citizens and businesses.”

The renewable energy community is another project promoted and developed by Ferrari as part of a sustainability strategy based on a scientific approach and the use of cutting-edge technologies. In 2022, the company installed a 1-MW fuel cell system and a 450 kWp photovoltaic system in Maranello, and further panels with a capacity of 2 MW are to be added in 2023. Ferrari has also adopted many innovations proposed by its employees for more efficient use of energy and materials: all initiatives implemented by the plant in 2022 led to a reduction in energy consumption by about 5 percent per car during the manufacturing process.

What does that mean?

Good idea! With the Renewable Energy Community, the communities – and thus also Ferrari – will become more energy autonomous than before, although the energy giant Enel X still has a thumb on the story.
