Federal Council Initiative: Lower Saxony aims to achieve affordable electricity prices for vehicles

(dpa/lni) The German automotive industry is in crisis, partly due to weak demand for electric cars. Lower Saxony wants to advocate for affordable and reliable charging electricity prices in the Bundesrat.

The state of Lower Saxony is launching an initiative in the Federal Council for affordable and reliable charging electricity prices. A corresponding cabinet decision was made today, as announced by the Lower Saxony State Chancellery. "As long as electromobility is sometimes even more expensive than driving with combustion engines, the switch is not appealing to consumers," criticized Transport Minister Olaf Lies (SPD).

Better framework conditions are needed. Not only should the prices for e-cars be appealing, but also the charging electricity prices. Price stability is particularly important. "The charging electricity price must be designed in such a way that it offers two advantages over fossil fuels: it saves money and benefits the climate," said Lies.

Charging Station Ranking: Lower Saxony in 11th Place

Lower Saxony has clearly committed to electromobility so far and continues to do so, the State Chancellery further announced. Through the funding program for the establishment of non-public charging infrastructure at companies, more than 3,000 charging points have been set up statewide. Additionally, the expansion of the charging infrastructure at 266 state properties and the conversion of the state vehicle fleet by 2030 is being further advanced.

In a nationwide comparison of the electric car stock in relation to the charging points, Lower Saxony only ranked 11th in a ranking by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) in November.
