Fastned wins tender for all-electric service areas in Belgium

Fastned emerged as the winner in the first Europe-wide tender for pure electric rest stops. The two large charging stations on a Belgian motorway will each offer twelve fast chargers, picnic areas, playgrounds, sanitary facilities, and shops.

The rapid charging company based in Amsterdam has been awarded a concession for two high-traffic locations as part of a tender from the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV). This tender result enables Fastned to develop and operate two large rapid charging stations with twelve charging points each on both sides of the E 17 motorway near the city of Ghent.

Highway Service Areas of the Future

The two locations in Gentbrugge will be the first "Highway Service Areas of the Future," exclusively serving electric cars and offering additional amenities such as toilets, sandwiches, and coffee. The stations can charge up to 1,000 electric vehicles per day, with each car obtaining a range of up to 300 kilometers in just 15 minutes.

Only Solar and Wind Power

For over a decade, Fastned has been a pioneer in accelerating the transition to electric mobility. The two new large drive-through stations feature 400-kW charging stations that exclusively supply energy from the sun and wind. This station concept is suitable for all electric vehicles, including longer trailers and trucks. The stations will be equipped with yellow canopies covered with photovoltaic panels, providing protection from rain and enabling safe and easy charging.

"This newly awarded contract demonstrates the trust of the Flemish road authority in our fast charging concept and is a recognition of the expertise we have developed in the European market over the past ten years. We are proud to have the opportunity to offer our customers coffee and additional facilities at these locations," says Tuur De Coninck, Country Manager Belgium at Fastned.

Construction begins in 2024

The AWV has set a goal to promote electromobility by providing space along its highway network for the construction and operation of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Fastned will continue to participate in tenders to provide drivers in Belgium and Europe with a comprehensive fast-charging network along major corridors. In Belgium, Fastned currently operates 19 fast-charging stations, with 24 locations in development. Construction for the stations in Gentbrugge is planned for 2024.

“We are committed to providing Belgian and European electric vehicle drivers with a reliable, high-quality, and accessible charging network that allows them the freedom to drive,” explains Michiel Langezaal, CEO of Fastned. “Winning one of the most important tenders in Europe this year demonstrates that Fastned is repeatedly capable of securing key locations to further expand its network. Every new tender we win brings us closer to our goal of having 1,000 large stations in our network by 2030.”

What does that mean?

Fastned has an impressive track record in tenders for high-traffic locations, particularly on major highways in Europe. By expanding its network, the Dutch company offers electric vehicle drivers more opportunities to charge their vehicles and quickly continue their journey. 1,000 large stations by 2030, that’s an ambitious goal….
