The CarBatteryReFactory by Fenecon, a provider of energy storage systems with smart energy management systems, has officially begun operation. In the factory located in Lower Bavarian Iggensbach (Deggendorf district), urgently needed large-scale storage systems are being produced from used and reconditioned electric vehicle batteries. Additionally, the production of the home storage energy management systems has been relocated to the new plant, significantly expanded, and automated.

The factory's production capacity is approximately 500 large-scale storage systems and 30,000 home storage units per year. The CarBatteryReFactory was funded by the EU and the Free State of Bavaria: The investment sum for the first expansion stage amounted to around 25 million euros, of which Bayern's economic promotion contributed 1.7 million and the EU Innovation Fund 4.5 million euros.

Sophisticated Energy Concept

On the 24,000 m2 site on the A3, production and storage halls equipped for large power storage, as well as a development laboratory, offices, and training rooms, were created in just over a year of construction time. Approximately 100 jobs are being created at the new plant. All parking spaces will be equipped with charging stations, and the company fleet is entirely electric. Additionally, fast chargers for cars and trucks are available.

Fenecon utilizes all suitable roof and facade surfaces for solar power production from the good 500 kWp system capacity. Heat supply is entirely electric with large heat pumps that can also be used for cooling in the summer, as well as electric peak load heaters.

The FEMS energy management system controls all producers, consumers, and the large storage units with a total of 1,000 kW and 1,800 kWh, which also cut the peak loads of the industrial operation. The grid power is obtained via a dynamic electricity tariff with quarter-hour prices based on the in-house FEMS app "Dynamic Electricity Tariff," an AI-based individually created energy roadmap with up to 24-hour forecast, as is also used by many users of the Fenecon home storage systems.

Highly Scaled Serial Production Processes

The home storage line has been running since January, and large-scale production of the Fenecon industrial models followed in February. In the commercial and industrial storage units with capacities ranging from 82 to 1,288 kWh, only new electric vehicle batteries from German premium vehicle manufacturers are used.

High Demand for Commercial and Industrial Energy Storage Systems

“The market for large-scale storage in commerce and industry, as well as for solar and charging parks, is currently growing very dynamically. The significant expansion of our production capacity comes at exactly the right time and allows us to offer highly competitive prices,” explains Franz-Josef Feilmeier, founder and CEO of Fenecon.

The Expansion Continues

The second CarBatteryReFactory is currently being built in South Carolina, as the US market also has surplus electric vehicle batteries as well as a need for large-scale energy storage.
