eMove 360°: China goes big - in airy halls

Manageable visitor interest, surprisingly many Chinese exhibitors - with a focus on charging and battery technology, the technology and B2B trade fair has returned to Munich this year after its stint in Berlin.

The eMove360° opened its doors for the seventh time, accompanied by the English-speaking eMove 360° Conference 2023, which took place concurrently over all three days of the fair. According to fair director Robert Metzger, in addition to the topics of Charging & Energy and battery technology, the focus was especially on automated driving and e-mobility in the commercial vehicle sector. Several automotive manufacturers utilized what Messe München claims to be the world's most important B2B fair for electromobility and autonomous driving.

Some Chinese companies were also present, with Nio, Aiways, and BYD showcasing part of their electric fleet. Kia (with an EV 6), Cupra, and the Nissan Townstar had also booked booths – Volvo, on the other hand, simply placed an electric truck tractor in the hall without comment, while e-mobility and truck supplier Quantron provided information to interested parties via advertising banners. In addition to technology companies primarily from Europe, a surprisingly high number of Asian manufacturers used the fair to present charging solutions and plug and cable technology.

Bidirectional Charging is Coming

At Leipzig-based charging communications specialist chargebyte, solutions based on software and hardware for electric vehicles were the focus. Interested visitors could take a close look at the new Powerline module and charging communication controller. The charging controllers are based on a real-time operating system, and the controller manages all processes of a DC charging session, from communication with the vehicle to control of power electronics and interaction with a backend. According to Johannes Wittenbeck of chargebyte, the communication standards DIN 70121, ISO 15118-2, and ISO 15118-20 – and thus the prerequisites for bidirectional charging – are met.

“The communication controller can be easily connected to the existing charging station hardware thanks to the integrated interfaces,” explains Wittenbeck. “The controller manages the entire charging process, so the user no longer has to worry about the communication between the charging station and the electric vehicle.”

Charging Solutions up to 480 kW

From the charging cable with 3.6 kW charging power to the high-performance charger with 480 kW, EM2GO has an impressive array of charging applications lined up at the booth. The EV wallboxes feature intelligent control, color display, a variety of communication interfaces and are equipped with calibrated energy meters as standard or optionally. The company from Langenselbold, Hesse, has a strong partner in the field of DC charging infrastructure with Zerova from Taiwan and offers a whole range of fast chargers from 30 kW to 480 kW.

Wallboxes Become Smart and Stylish

Slim and made from the finest materials – this is how Green-Seed from the United Kingdom advertises its wallboxes. The charging solution also includes an app that allows the charging process to be controlled and monitored. For the commercial sector, there are also fast chargers with up to 360 kW on offer. Founder Zooey Zhang also presented her vision of intelligent charging and the path to climate neutrality in the forum.

A startup named Green Wallbox from Poland introduced elegant home charging solutions with up to 22kW. The top model is a sleek metal stand with a mounted box, which can be fitted with various real wood covers. The company manufactures everything in Poland except for the plugs and parts of the electronics – the plan is to produce all components in the country by the end of next year and no longer rely on Asian manufacturers.

What does this mean?

In an IAA year, it may be more challenging to cover topics that were already represented at the automobile show. However, the Power2Drive 2023 was virtually overrun by masses of visitors, which was certainly also due to the simultaneously occurring trade fairs Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, and EM-Power Europe. The eMove 360° had a surprisingly difficult time attracting visitors this year. In the rather spacious environment of Hall A 6, one had plenty of room to move and always found willing contacts among the exhibitors.
