Elvah Report: 115,000 Charging Processes Daily, Strong Growth - EnBW Dominates

Impressive growth noted by the analysis of the E.ON subsidiary, despite the current electric lull. EnBW clearly dominates the market. Ionity is the most efficient. But one in ten charging attempts fails.

The large Charging Market Report 2024 released today by the charging app specialist elvah, a subsidiary of the energy group E.ON, has created a comprehensive overview of the public charging market for electric vehicles in Germany with over half a billion analyzed data points. With nearly 500 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of charged energy and 21 million charging processes in the first half of 2024, the German charging market is achieving impressive growth, the analysts note. This corresponds to 115,000 charging processes per day and an amount of energy sufficient to supply around 160,000 German households with electricity for a year.

“With our Charging Market Report 2024, we are publishing extensive figures and insights for the first time that have not existed in this form before. Our goal is to create more transparency and help the market better understand the dynamics and developments - so that together we can drive the energy transition and the future of electromobility forward," explains Gowrynath Sivaganeshamoorthy, co-founder and CEO of elvah.

One provider dominates Germany

EnBW leads the German fast charging market (DC) with a market share of 31% and occupies the top position in all 16 federal states. Competitors Aral Pulse, Ionity, EWEGo, and Allego in positions 2 to 5 together achieve a comparable market share. Large charging station operators are often very successful at strategic locations such as retail centers with DC charging stations. In city, slow charging (AC), however, the market remains highly fragmented, with regional municipal utilities and energy providers taking the top positions.

Infrastructural challenges

Ionity leads the ranking of the most efficient DC charging infrastructure, followed by Aldi Süd and Fastned. In the AC segment, Stadtwerke München and Hamburger Energiewerke are ahead. With just under one percent of the charging points in the AC market, they handle almost four percent of all charging processes.

However, with a charging success rate of 89 percent, the public charging infrastructure has reliability potential to improve. This means that at least one in ten charging processes at public charging points fails. Cases where the charging stations do not respond are not included.

Regional Differences

The report provides a comprehensive overview of market dynamics in the individual federal states and reveals significant regional differences. Hamburg records the highest number of charging processes per inhabitant (0.43), followed by Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. The lowest figures are found in Thuringia, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Saxony-Anhalt.

Highways as Central Charging Points

Highway locations play a central role in the German charging market. The ten most important highways - led by the A3, A7, and A8 - charged a total of 90 GWh in the first half of 2024, which corresponds to 19 percent of the total energy charged in Germany during this period. EnBW and Ionity dominate the market activities and shape the user experience at these locations.

Insights into Market Dynamics

The Charging Market Report 2024 by elvah offers valuable insights that contribute to fostering healthy competition and improving market transparency. These insights are intended to help market participants, as well as politicians and the public, make informed decisions for the future of electromobility.
