Electromobility: Conti + Varta = E-Solution for Commuters

Continental's development and production service provider, Continental Engineering Services (CES), is collaborating with battery specialist Varta. The aim of the partnership is to develop new technologies and products that primarily aim to bring progress in sustainable solutions in the field of electromobility.

In a first pilot project, both partners have now jointly developed a product for the two-wheeler market: an interchangeable 48-volt battery pack for electrically powered two-wheelers with a drive power of 10 kW or more. Such vehicles are comparable in engine strength and maximum speed to conventionally powered scooters with a displacement of 125 cc or more. The battery pack consists of Varta's high-performance V4Drive cell, which is based on lithium-ion technology and, according to the company, is characterized by high performance, fast charging capability, low temperature resistance, and a compact design. A specially developed battery management system from CES now allows the use of this high-performance battery cell in automotive two-wheeler applications. The special feature: The nine-kilogram light battery case enables a range of 50 kilometers and a drive power of 10 kW. It can be easily detached from the two-wheeler with a simple hand movement and charged externally. Additionally, any number of battery packs can be connected and controlled via the new battery management electronics. This way, the range of an e-scooter can be doubled to 100 kilometers by using two batteries, the companies report.

Solution for Commuters

This technology fills a gap in the rapidly growing market for battery-electric vehicles. Currently available e-scooters (mostly comparable to conventional 50-cc scooters) are unappealing to commuters due to their limited top speed. More powerful electric two-wheelers, on the other hand, have so far always had a built-in battery, which essentially requires a dedicated parking space with charging capability.

“Continental Engineering Services and Varta have jointly developed an attractive solution for commuters without their own parking space,” says Alex Rupprecht, Director of the Business Segment Driveline & Electrification at CES.

The 48-volt exchangeable battery based on the V4Drive cell and the battery management system ensure the breakthrough of e-mobility on two wheels in commuter traffic, Rupprecht continues.

“The battery system offers both high energy and power density and meets the automotive standards required in this performance class. The battery pack, in conjunction with the intelligent battery management, enables practical ranges, can be easily removed and quickly charged. An ideal solution for commuters without a charging option at the parking space.”

Powerful & Robust

Intelligent battery solutions are the key to the success of electromobility. The shift away from conventional drive technologies towards sustainable drive alternatives requires one thing above all else: powerful and robust battery systems.

"Characteristics such as high energy density, fast charging capability, and flexibility in design, as embodied by our cylindrical V4Drive cell, are crucial criteria for progress in electromobility. Additionally, intelligent battery management is important to harness the full potential of battery solutions," explains Gordon Clements, General Manager at VARTA Solutions.

The easily replaceable and fast-charging battery solution for high-performance electric two-wheelers offers all the advantages that users expect from an urban and environmentally friendly two-wheeler.

Prototype in just half a year

The new battery system for electric two-wheelers was able to be realized from the initial idea to a fully functional prototype in just half a year thanks to the partnership between the two companies.
