Electric Taxis: VW ID.4 is a hit in Hamburg

With 163 e-taxis of the VW ID.4 type already in operation or funded with a concrete order proof, the Volkswagen brand clearly leads the list of e-taxis supported for the Hamburg project "Zukunftstaxi." The next followers are the Tesla Model 3 with 38 units and the Kia e-Niro with 21 vehicles. Far behind in fourth place is the Mercedes-Benz e-Vito transporter with 13 units and its van counterpart EQV with 9 vehicles. This is the interim result drawn by the project management at the Hamburg Authority for Mobility and Traffic Change at the end of April.

The remarkable dominance of the VW ID.4 is likely primarily due to the commitment of a taxi support dealer, who was apparently bold enough to secure sufficient vehicles. Most of these models were likely converted into taxis by the Hamburg outfitter Reuss with components from Haberl Electronic from Arnstorf.

The VW ID.4 has also been put into service as a taxi in other regions of Germany. For example, Steve Schneider from Saarbrücken has already had two of these e-taxis converted by Jürgen Weberpals in Cologne, the same person entrusted with the conversion by Taxi Irro in Lüchow (reported by taxi today). Silvio Weiß in Zeulenroda is also using several rental cars and a taxi of this type, about whose far advanced fleet conversion to electric vehicles taxi today will soon report.

Officially, one cannot order the VW ID.4 as a taxi from the factory. So far, Volkswagen's very active taxi development during the diesel era has not yet put a battery-electric vehicle on the road, but has tested the too-small-for-a-taxi VW ID.3 and the VW ID.4 with a few units. Reportedly, the VW ID.4 will also not come with a taxi or rental car equipment package from the factory.
