Automobile Association expects fewer new registrations for 2025. The Central Association of the German Motor Vehicle Industry (ZDK) expects around 2.7 million new cars in Germany for the coming year. This forecast is below the approximately 2.83 million passenger cars the association expects for this year, it announced. The association represents the interests of car dealerships and automotive workshops. As the main reason for the expected decline, ZDK Vice President Thomas Peckruhn cited the weakening demand for electric cars.

«Since incentives through subsidies in the field of e-mobility are likely to be absent until a new federal government is formed, and customers are reacting cautiously given the economic uncertainties, high new vehicle prices, and still high key interest rates, we anticipate a declining trend in new car registrations for the coming year,» he further stated.

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, around 2.35 million cars were newly registered between January and October of the current year. The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) expects around 2.7 million new registrations by the end of the year, thus remaining below the forecast of the ZDK for the current year. The VDA has not yet provided a forecast for 2025.

Expectations suggest that the used car market should perform better in 2025. With around 6.8 million car ownership transfers, a higher level than in 2024 is expected, according to the ZDK. By the end of December 2024, the association forecasts around 6.6 million ownership transfers.
