Overall, the car market declined in 2021, with approximately 10.1 percent fewer vehicles registered than in the previous year. Gasoline-powered cars were far below the previous year's level (46.7%) at 37.1 percent, but still made up the largest share of registrations with 972,588 units. In second place were hybrid vehicles with 754,588 units. Their share increased by 43 percent last year. Diesel continues to lose ground (minus 36 percent, 524,446 vehicles) but still ranks ahead of pure battery-powered vehicles with a 13.6 percent market share (increase of 83.3 percent, 355,961 cars).
The increased interest in electric cars is mainly attributed to the increased purchase premium of up to 9,000 euros. The top three registrations in Germany are led by Tesla's Model 3, followed by the now unavailable VW e-up! and the VW ID.3.
