E.ON Study: One in Four Rides a Pedelec - for Work and Leisure
The e-bike boom continues and the prevalence of cycling with electric assistance is on the rise. "The popularity of electric bikes is reaching a new peak. One in four people in Germany now owns an electric bicycle – more than ever since our first survey* conducted in 2020," explains Jens Michael Peters, Managing Director of Energy Solutions at E.ON Energie Deutschland.
"E-bikes can also be a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional combustion-engine cars, especially for shorter distances. Sustainability is an important motive for many e-bike enthusiasts," Peters continues.
According to the new survey results, the prevalence of electric bicycles in Germany is on average 24.7 percent. Compared to 2023 (23.3 percent), this represents a further increase. In the first survey in 2020, only 15.2 percent of respondents said they owned an e-bike. The distribution across age groups reveals that e-bike ownership has particularly increased among 18- to 29-year-olds: 17.5 percent of this age group now own an electric bicycle. In 2023, it was 13.8 percent. E-bikes or pedelecs are still most widespread among people between 50 and 64 years old (27.4 percent) and those over 65 (27.7 percent).
Looking at the federal states, most e-bike enthusiasts come from Lower Saxony: 32.6 percent of residents report owning an electric bicycle. This is followed by Baden-Württemberg (27.4 percent), Bavaria (26.4 percent), Schleswig-Holstein (26.2 percent), and North Rhine-Westphalia (26 percent). The ranking of districts and independent cities nationwide is led by Emsland and Grafschaft Bentheim (each with 47.3 percent). They are followed by Leer (42.6 percent), Wittmund (41.8 percent), and Aurich (41 percent). The provider visualized the regional results in the interactive E.ON Energy Atlas.
Sustainability in Acquisition and Charging at the Forefront
The survey shows that e-bike enthusiasts think climate-friendly when charging their bikes: 40.7 percent of e-bike owners charge it with green electricity. Additionally, 28.8 percent of people who are planning to purchase an electric bike could imagine switching to a green electricity tariff with the purchase of an e-bike. 21.5 percent of surveyed e-bike owners chose to buy one for sustainability reasons, such as lower emissions compared to cars. Among the various models, the City E-Bike is the most frequently chosen at 37.3 percent, followed by the Trekking E-Bike at 26.4 percent, and the E-Mountainbike at 15.9 percent.
Popular Means of Transportation on Vacation and to Work
Whether as a sporting challenge or to explore the surroundings leisurely: In total, 12.5 percent of Germans have used an e-bike as a means of transportation at their vacation destination in the past twelve months, spread over nine percent of respondents who use their own electric bike and 3.5 percent who rent one on-site. 36.3 percent of Germans can imagine relying on the sustainable mode of transportation in their next vacation. This particularly applies to the younger age group of 18 to 29-year-olds (46.1 percent). A multi-day bike tour with electric assistance is considered by a quarter of Germans.
Back in everyday life, 6.8 percent of working individuals regularly use the e-bike for their commute. The possibility of leasing a company bike to save on the purchase of an e-bike is of interest to a total of 34.5 percent of respondents. According to their own statements, 13.2 percent of employed 18 to 29-year-olds already use an option provided by their employer.
