Driving Report Peugeot e-5008: New Size
The electric Peugeot e-5008 in particular is likely to hurt many competitors. This is because Peugeot has listened to what customers really want, which is no longer often the case in the automotive industry. And it’s not just families calling for more SUV styling, preferably more power and more comfort. In all these areas, the new Peugeot 5008 has made a significant leap forward. It utilizes the maximum wheelbase of the STLA Medium, meaning the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 are now practically built “around” the Opel Grandland, which will be positioned exactly between the two in the future.
With a length of 4.79 meters, the crossover offers space for five, or even up to seven people. Even though the headroom in the rear is not particularly generous, the space available in the interior both in the front and back can be convincing. However, real long-distance trips with seven people in the electrified French car remain a pipe dream. But with two adults and two children, you travel extremely comfortably – lots of luggage included. And if necessary, the children’s friends can also be chauffeured home in the third row.
Visually, the 5008 has made a big leap forward
The Peugeot 5008 has become even more stylish compared to its predecessor. Visually less van and more SUV, even though its design still leans towards the former. However, the most significant advancements are in the interior. The seats are comfortable, adjustable electrically depending on the version, and provide both lateral support and thigh support. The driver and co-pilot gaze upon a 21-inch panoramic display, which, inspired by Cadillac or BMW, gently curves around the driver’s workspace.
Unfortunately, Peugeot sticks to its small steering wheel, which depending on the driver’s stature, remains positioned either under or in front of the instruments. There is hardly an alternative to an additional head-up display, which other brands in this league do offer. Instead, the top of the steering wheel remains in the driver’s field of view, obstructing visibility. It’s a pity, because otherwise, the operation via the dual-function switch panel in the center console works well.
The surfaces in the upper and thus visible part are padded, illuminated, and partly tastefully upholstered – making the e-5008 look more upscale than some competitors and also offers numerous storage spaces. Below the knee line, however, unsightly hard plastic takes over, and the door pockets are not lined, causing objects to rattle and become scratched inside.
Lots of comfort and well-thought-out details
Despite the annoying hard plastic areas, Peugeot has learned a lot. The large panoramic roof can be opened in the front section and has an electric shade, which not only provides shade but also atmosphere in rain and cold weather. At least the outer rear seats are pleasantly heated, and separate climate control for the rear and numerous USB ports make the 5008 an ideal travel vehicle.
It is positioned as an electric version with appealing ranges well over 600 kilometers, if you choose the internal combustion engine. The electric models realistically reach 400 km plus or minus x. The 5008 is also available in hybrid versions, but the 48-volt variant with a modest 100 kW / 136 hp is unlikely to attract many customers to this segment. More interesting for some buyers might be the 195 hp plug-in hybrid, but most customers, according to the manufacturer’s wishes, are expected to be driving electrically in an e-5008 from autumn onwards.
French idiosyncrasies: the battery-drive combinations
Here, there are somewhat confusingly two very closely related front-wheel-drive models with 157 kW / 213 hp and 169 kW / 231 hp. The first is paired with the small 73-kWh battery pack, while the second comes with the larger 96 kWh version. However, the highly recommended large battery pack is not available for the 235 kW / 320 hp all-wheel-drive model. No one needs to understand this. The same applies to the conditioning function, which is currently only available as a pre-installation. This issue is expected to be resolved by the end of the year.
The only consolation: the new Peugeot e-5008 won’t be delivered to customers before October anyway. The maximum DC charging speed: 160 kW – which is not more than lower mid-range in the competition. Currently, AC charging is limited to 11 kilowatts; the 22-kW version (bidirectional) will follow later. However, already available at market launch: the charging flap on the left rear flank, which is likely the largest of its kind in the entire electric car market.
The base electric model has its work cut out with weight and size
The electric base version with 157 kW / 213 hp is, given its size and an empty weight of almost 2.3 tons, a real beginner, as the family van, priced at least EUR 51,500, simply lacks the enthusiasm for fast driving. Even the nearly immediate availability of 345 Nm of maximum torque is not much when additional passengers or luggage are on board, and the driving weight easily reaches 2.5 tons. Especially at medium and higher speeds, it becomes sluggish behind the wheel for those who want to overtake or enter a highway. The speed limit is governed at 170 km/h regardless of the selected driving program. The more powerful all-wheel-drive version can reach 180 km/h, and the two hybrids are noticeably faster at 200 and 220 km/h respectively.
If you often travel long distances, you should at least opt for the long-range version, which extends the electric range from around 500 to over 650 kilometers according to WLTP and provides a bit more power. Realistically, this gives you a range of 450 kilometers plus or minus x.
The chassis is extremely comfortable, and the body roll in fast-driven curves is less noticeable than in a comparable combustion engine vehicle due to the heavy battery pack (520 kg) along with the low center of gravity. The steering is significantly more precise than previously known. Peugeot makes it especially easy with the two versions Allure and GT. The GT variant is particularly recommended, offering, among other things, an electric tailgate, LED headlights, 20-inch wheels, and three-zone climate control.
The prices for the e-5008 start at 51,150 euros or 563 euros on lease. Peugeot has also listened here and has (just about) maintained a reasonable measure. Due to its uniqueness between (optionally seven-seated) minivan and SUV, the electric vehicle is likely to find its way.
