Don't forget to exchange your driver's license!

Millions of driver's licenses need to be exchanged. To avoid overburdening the responsible authorities, staggered deadlines have been established based on both the year of birth and the year the license was issued. But which groups of people need to make an exchange by which key date?

Currently, there are about 100 different driver's licenses in the EU. By 2033, a unified driver's license will be introduced in the EU. The standardization aims to register all documents in a database to prevent potential abuses. By January 19, 2033, the EU aims to introduce a uniform driving license for all citizens within the European Union in plastic card format.

In Germany, 43 million people are affected by the exchange of driver's licenses. The initiative was already launched in 2022. To prevent all applicants from rushing to the licensing offices at the same time and applicants having to wait a long time for their documents, the legislator has set staggered deadlines. The deadlines depend on the applicant's year of birth and the year the driver's license was issued.

What documents are required for the exchange?

For the exchange, a valid identity card or passport, a biometric passport photo, and the old driver's license are required. The processing fee is approximately 25 euros (a higher fee may apply in some cases). In the event of a change of residence since receiving the driver's license to be exchanged, a card index copy from the responsible driving license authority is additionally required. With the issuance of the new EU driver's license, its validity period is set at 15 years. After the expiration of the validity period, a new exchange of the license is required.

Old driver's license – criminal offense for trucks and buses

A warning fine of ten euros is the consequence if the deadline passes or is forgotten and the old car or motorcycle license continues to be used. This is reported by the ADAC. The disregard of this regulation does not constitute a criminal offense for motorcyclists and car drivers. However, in the case of an inspection of truck and bus drivers with old licenses, it constitutes a criminal offense. In this case, significantly harsher sanctions are threatened.
