The German logistics company DHL will continue to handle the worldwide transport of equipment for the FIA Formula One World Championship, the two contract partners announced. The company has been involved in motorsport logistics for more than 40 years, and for Formula 1 for 20 years. According to its own statements, Formula 1 aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. This sustainability strategy will be underscored by 19 additional trucks powered by biofuel.

The number of such trucks operated, which will be deployed for the European stage of this year's racing season, has been doubled to 37. According to DHL, this should reduce CO2 emissions by an average of 83 percent compared to diesel trucks.

“Both companies share a strong commitment to sustainability goals and a common vision to make the sport greener and more efficient,” said Arjan Sissing, Global Head of Brand Marketing at DHL Group, on the occasion of the signed contract extension.

The cooperation partners have experienced a lot together over the past 20 years. In 2024, 24 races are to take place. In order to ensure better race operations in certain regions and to reduce the transport routes between the events, the calendar has been optimized.

In 2019, Formula 1 announced the goal of net-zero emissions. According to the logistics service provider’s sustainability strategy, in addition to trucks powered by biofuels, fuel-efficient Boeing 777 aircraft are also planned. Together, they are advancing the sustainability agenda, with further eco-friendly logistics initiatives planned for the upcoming season.

Highly Anticipated

This year's racing season starts on February 29 with the Bahrain Grand Prix. The 2024 race calendar, featuring races in 21 countries across five continents, includes three triple headers and five double headers with three and two races, respectively, on consecutive weekends. For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, there are also plans to return to China.

100 Experts in Action

Up to 1,400 tons of valuable and delicate cargo, including race cars, tires, spare parts, fuel, broadcasting technology, as well as marketing and hospitality equipment, need to be transported for each race, explains DHL. According to their own information, the motorsports team of the logistics service provider comprises 100 logistics experts, about half of whom are on site for each event. For selected European Formula 1 races, the team will use a new motorhome as a control center later this season, equipped with solar panels, charging and recycling stations, and transported by a biofuel truck.
