The new Volvo EX90 hits the roads: The first units of the all-electric premium SUV will be delivered to customers in the USA and Europe later this month. Additional markets will follow in the course of the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2025. In Germany, the Volvo EX90 will be offered at gross prices starting from 83,700 euros.

WLTP ranges of up to 614 km

The Volvo EX90 is the new all-electric SUV flagship model from the Swedish premium car manufacturer. It is the first vehicle of the brand to be based on the new, in-house developed technology and vehicle architecture SPA2 (Scalable Product Architecture 2). At just under 5 meters in length, the EX90 combines an elegant, aerodynamically optimized design with generous interior space. Depending on the chosen configuration, the new flagship model of the Swedish brand offers five, six, or seven seats across up to three rows. Three powerful drive versions with a maximum of 380 kW, two battery sizes for WLTP ranges of up to 614 km, and three equipment lines are available.

The Beginning of a New Era?

In recent weeks, Volvo CEO and President Jim Rowan, along with colleagues, has put the Volvo EX90 to the test – during a road trip across the USA from the Volvo plant outside Charleston, South Carolina, to California.

"After this journey, I can confidently say that the EX90 is the best car we've ever built," says Jim Rowan. "The 950 km drive through three US states under different driving conditions and road surfaces has convinced me completely: charging, handling, ride comfort, the quietness inside the cabin, as well as the outstanding sound system, reliability, technology, and the control system - I have never driven a Volvo like this. This vehicle marks the beginning of a new era for Volvo Cars."

Paradigm Shift

As the first Volvo model defined by software and core computing, the EX90 also marks a paradigm shift for the company. The in-vehicle AI computer is based on the Nvidia Drive platform and works with Qualcomm Technologies' Snapdragon cockpit platform and Volvo-developed software to control the major vehicle functions: from safety to infotainment to battery management.

Radar sensors, cameras, and a lidar sensor supplied by Luminar monitor the vehicle's surroundings to enhance safety. In conjunction with a permanent 5G connection and regular software updates, it is also possible to continuously improve and expand the vehicle's functions over time. Additionally, the EX90 is the first vehicle from the brand designed for bidirectional charging and, in combination with the optional audio system from Bowers & Wilkins, offers the new "Abbey Road Studios" sound mode as the first vehicle in the world.

Production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles

Production of the Volvo EX90 began at the start of the year at the Volvo plant near Charleston in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The annual capacity is up to 150,000 vehicles. To make the facility future-proof, Volvo Cars has made extensive investments in its plant over the past few years. The body shop and paint shop have been renewed and significantly expanded, and a production line for battery packs has been established.
