DCS: Charging infrastructure is well developed - eleven electric cars per charging point

The charging network pioneer counters claims that the charging infrastructure in Germany is poorly developed. In relation to the refueling infrastructure, there is actually better coverage per electric vehicle: there is one charging point for every eleven electric vehicles. For combustion vehicles, it’s 544 vehicles per fuel pump. DCS: The reasons for the slow ramp-up lie not in the infrastructure but in the vague political framework and high purchase prices.

Better than their reputation: Contrary to frequent claims, even from politicians, the charging infrastructure in Germany is already in a good state of development, says the pioneer DCS and refers to new figures. | Photo: DCS

The charging infrastructure for electric cars in Germany is already well developed and more than enough to meet current demand—especially in comparison to the coverage of fuel stations. This is according to an analysis of internal data by Digital Charging Solutions (DCS) GmbH. Contrary to the current debate about the inadequate charging infrastructure, the current infrastructure is appropriately expanded to meet demands. At the end of 2023, there were 1,408,681 pure electric cars registered in Germany. In contrast, there were 127,484 publicly accessible charging points. This figure comes from an evaluation of the network to which DCS customers have access, covering 99 percent of all charging points in Germany.

This means that for every public charging point, there are 11 electric vehicles. Compared to the ratio of combustion engine vehicles (approx. 47,300,000) to fuel pumps (approx. 86,800*), the infrastructure for electric cars is better developed than for combustion engines. Because for every fuel pump, there are 544 vehicles.

"These figures show that the current debate about the charging infrastructure is not very effective. The number of charging points is sufficient for the existing electric fleet and is even excellent compared to the coverage with fuel pumps. The reasons for the sluggish growth of e-mobility lie elsewhere - namely in the nebulous political framework conditions and the still too high costs of electric cars," commented Jörg Reimann, CEO of DCS.
