DB and Brompton – Train Travel with the Classic Folding Bike

Starting in June, Deutsche Bahn, in collaboration with London-based folding bike specialist Brompton, will offer a new subscription: For 41 euros a month, interested parties can rent a high-quality folding bike and take it on buses and trains for free.

The Brompton is the classic folding bike – so far, hardly any manufacturer has managed to surpass the practicality of the Brompton. The folding bike can be easily and quickly folded into a portable package, making it particularly space-saving. This makes it very convenient to take on public transportation. When folded, the bikes count as luggage – allowing commuters to take them on buses and trains without needing bike tickets or being restricted by times when bikes are not allowed. Especially for the route to and from the train station, folding bikes are a flexible and environmentally friendly solution – without the hassle of searching for a parking spot.

Insurance included

The monthly subscription price includes delivery within Germany, insurance, and a comprehensive service check after six months. Customers enter into the contract directly with Brompton. The contract duration is twelve months and then ends automatically. Customers who wish to keep the folding bike can either extend their subscription or purchase a new Brompton folding bike at a discounted price.

With the subscription, DB aims to promote the combination of bicycle and train travel. As part of a pilot project, DB has already tested the foldable bike subscription with Brompton for twelve months on the S-Bahn Stuttgart. The response was consistently positive, so DB will roll out the offer nationwide starting June 1, 2023.

What does that mean?

The folding bike icon Brompton can be assembled and disassembled in a flash and, when folded, is one of the smallest folding bikes ever. In England, the folding bike is ubiquitous in urban traffic, and with the offerings of the railway, perhaps we will soon see more "Bromptonauts" here as well!
