Dangerous Intersection: AI-Based Video Technology from Kapsch Prevents Accidents

25% of all traffic accidents occur when turning, merging, or crossing. A new technology from Kapsch TrafficCom, which is already being tested in Montreal, aims to prevent this.

According to ADAC, almost 25% of all traffic accidents in Germany occur when turning, merging, or crossing. Modern video systems can help prevent accidents. Cyclists and pedestrians are particularly at risk, as they are minimally protected in the event of a collision. To achieve the federal government's "Vision Zero", which aims to reduce road fatalities to zero, intersection areas must be made safer.

Monitoring Intersection Situations

One solution is monitoring intersection situations with traffic cameras and the automated analysis of the images these cameras capture. Modern, AI-based video technology helps to better understand traffic flow and, most importantly, independently detect critical situations and trigger alarms:

  • Traffic Analysis: Traffic analysis provides insights into traffic flow by counting vehicles, classifying them by type, measuring their speed, and analyzing their origin and destination
  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety: Pedestrians and bicycles are automatically recognized as such and their proximity to vehicles is recorded to detect critical situations and timely warnings can be issued to connected vehicles
  • Incident/Anomaly Detection: The system detects vehicles stopped on the roadway and wrong-way drivers. It can also detect traffic jams and violations of traffic rules
  • Emergency and Public Transport Vehicles: Emergency vehicles are automatically recognized, and the intersection can be closed for their passage, mitigating highly risky traffic situations. The same applies to public transport, which can reliably and quickly pass through intersections thanks to these intelligent systems

“Ultimately, by using such systems, we can make intersections safer and above all smoother in terms of traffic flow, which benefits the entire urban mobility,” explains Marko Frank, traffic expert at Kapsch TrafficCom. “The system is flexible and expandable, and can be adapted to the specific conditions of each location.”

Where is the technology already in use?

The video technology is currently prominently used in the Canadian city of Montreal, where it detects risky situations. In the event of an incident, warnings and relevant information are sent to the operators of the city's traffic management center. Based on the system's data, specific warnings are then sent directly to the connected vehicles near the incident.

Another application can be found in the pioneering Aimes project in the Australian city of Melbourne, where connected vehicles are alerted to approaching pedestrians.

"Technologically, many things are possible that may seem utopian at first glance," says Marko Frank. "But once the decision is made to take action, many opportunities arise to create added value for the entire population. More safety, fewer accidents, and a more sustainable design of traffic are central arguments for the city of the future."
