Daimler Buses: Competence Center for 3D Printing Expands

In the near future, customers from other industries should also be supported in the procurement and supply of parts with 3D printed parts.

According to Daimler Buses, nearly 40,000 bus spare parts are currently 3D-printable. Some of these are already available exclusively as 3D-printed spare parts following appropriate digitization steps, approval processes, and numerous product tests. (Photo: Daimler)

The 3D Printing Competence Center of Daimler Buses is expanding its range of services and will now offer services related to additive manufacturing to customers from other industries as well. The new service portfolio includes various consulting services, data preparation, digital warehousing, and, if needed, customized part manufacturing. An overview of the available services can be viewed on the "Additive Manufacturing Solutions" website at additive-manufacturing-solutions.evobus.com.

“At Daimler Buses, we have been intensively engaged with additive manufacturing since 2016. We have had many positive experiences with 3D printing technology and have built a lot of knowledge – that we would like to share. With our own consulting unit, we will also advise customers from other industries and support them in digitizing parts procurement,” said Bernd Mack, Head of Customer Services & Parts at Daimler Buses.

Fast and Flexible

When certain parts are missing in production or for replacement needs, quick solutions are necessary to maintain deliverability. Whether it's about short-term one-time needs, reducing delivery times, or specific suppliers breaking away: additive manufacturing offers a variety of solutions.

With Daimler Buses' 3D printing services, not only can urgent needs be addressed, but cost savings can also be realized in warehousing, tool procurement, and scrapping, according to the company.

Holistic Solution Approaches

The 3D Printing Competence Center of Daimler Buses offers holistic solution approaches for all elements of the 3D printing value chain. Companies can, for example, commission a part screening to conduct a potential part analysis adapted to their parts portfolio. The service spectrum extends to support in matters of digital warehousing.

Quick Entry into Additive Manufacturing with Webinars

Additionally, webinars and workshops are offered that enable a quick entry into additive manufacturing within the framework of "Quick Start" concepts. These can be utilized modularly with successive, but also individually bookable trainings on various topics. All modules can be individually tailored to the needs of the customers and are also suitable for companies that have had little or no contact with additive manufacturing so far.

3D Printing at Daimler Buses

3D printing is primarily used at Daimler Buses in the aftermarket sector to quickly and flexibly respond to urgent customer needs, for example, for rarely needed parts or custom requests. Currently, nearly 40,000 bus spare parts are 3D printable.

Some of these parts are already available exclusively as 3D-printed spare parts after corresponding digitization steps, approval processes, and numerous product tests, and are stored in the "Digital Warehouse" with all necessary printing information. Customers can purchase 3D printing licenses both online and through their service partner to have the corresponding parts produced at a certified 3D printing center.
