Accelera, a business segment of Cummins, is both a component supplier and an integrator, focusing on batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, e-axles, traction drives, and electrolyzers, and currently has operations in North America, Europe, and China, as well as additional joint ventures in the Netherlands and China.

According to Jennifer Rumsey, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cummins, the introduction of Accelera is a significant step in Cummins' efforts to achieve its Destination Zero strategy. The focus is on the development of Cummins technologies to achieve zero emissions across its entire product portfolio. Cummins' Destination Zero strategy is based on the recognition that multiple solutions are required to achieve industry-wide decarbonization for the various applications of the company.

Zero Emissions by 2050

In recent years, Cummins has invested more than 1.5 billion US dollars in research and technology, capital, and acquisitions to enhance the leadership and technological capabilities of Accelera. Today, Accelera is a global leader in zero-emission technologies, offering battery electric and fuel cell electric solutions for commercial and industrial applications, and it has hundreds of electrolyzers that are producing hydrogen worldwide.

"To achieve our goal of net zero emissions by 2050, we need to leverage our entire business portfolio," said Rumsey. "While we continue to lead and innovate with engine-based solutions that power our customers' businesses, we have also built the most comprehensive combination of zero-emission technologies for the commercial vehicle industry, such as battery electric and fuel cell electric powertrain solutions, and electrolyzers for green hydrogen production."

Accelera develops a range of zero-emission solutions, including hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, e-axles, traction systems, and electrolyzers, to sustainably supply a variety of industries from commercial transport to chemical production. As a supplier and integrator of components, Accelera decarbonizes applications such as buses, trucks, trains, construction equipment, stationary power supply, and carbon-intensive industrial processes.

“The founding of Accelera underscores our commitment to being a leader in zero-emission solutions and highlights our unique ability to leverage our deep understanding of our customers' needs and applications, our technical expertise, and our extensive service and support network to accompany our customers in the energy transition,” explains Rumsey further.

Amy Davis, who has led the New Power business unit since 2020, will serve as President of Accelera. Davis has held a range of global and business leadership positions during her more than 25 years with Cummins. In her role as President of Accelera, Davis will continue to lead the innovation and business development of market-leading zero-emission technologies and support customers on their path to net-zero emissions.

"Accelera's goal is simple: We want to secure a sustainable future for the industries that keep the world running," said Davis. "The introduction of this new brand provides additional focus to our business and enables us to stay ahead of the ever-changing zero-emission landscape. By leveraging Cummins' deep understanding of our customers' needs and the demands of their applications, Accelera will deliver leading zero-emission technologies necessary to accelerate the transition to zero."

Accelera Electrolyzer for Quebec, 1,000 School Buses for the USA

Accelera by Cummins will supply a 90-megawatt proton exchange membrane electrolyzer system for the Varennes Carbon Recycling facility in Quebec, Canada. The project is the largest electrolyzer project Cummins has announced to date and a significant step towards a green hydrogen-based economy in North America. It will help convert non-recyclable waste into biofuels and circular chemicals.

Cummins' subsidiary Accelera and Blue Bird plan to operate a new fleet of 1,000 electric school buses in the United States over the next 12 to 18 months. The production of the electric school buses will be significantly accelerated, doubling the number of zero-emission school buses the two companies have put into operation since the start of production. When 1,000 new electric school buses are on the road, 10,600 tons of harmful carbon emissions will be avoided annually.

What does this mean?

New technologies have reduced the company's product emissions by more than 90 percent over the past 25 years. Accelera is intended to further advance the company's path towards a zero-emission future. To this end, Cummins is investing in expanding its production capacity for electrolyzers, among other things, and is completing the acquisition of Siemens' commercial vehicle division and the American automotive supplier Meritor this year.
