Large displays with a lot of visually presented information can lead to sensory overload while driving. The ShyTechDisplay from Continental aims to help keep all important information in view without endangering driving safety or distracting from traffic. According to the company, not every displayed message is relevant in every situation. Therefore, the display and control areas appear with this display solution only when they are relevant to the driver.

A semi-transparent surface is intended to ensure that the screens blend seamlessly into the surrounding surface—both visually and haptically. When the display is not needed, it is virtually invisible to the human eye, according to Continental. Navigation or communication information and the touchscreen menu are always present. The display and control elements of the screen are only activated when a hand approaches, for example. The display can also be activated via voice control or by briefly tapping the screen surface.

“Displays are the central human-machine interface in the vehicle,” says Ulrich Lüders, Head of Strategy and Portfolio in the Human Machine Interface business unit at Continental, and adds: “The design of display solutions therefore plays a central role in the design of the cockpit. The cockpit of the future will, according to him, be digital, immersive, and indeed reserved (‘shy’)."

The company is thus pursuing a puristic approach to interior design, reduced to the essentials. To prevent deactivated screens from appearing as black empty spaces, the display surface mimics the design of the instrument panel—depending on the configuration, the look of wood trims, carbon trims, or a leather surface is possible. The haptics should also come close to the original material, according to the company.

Can be mounted almost anywhere in the vehicle

Due to the mentioned properties, screens could be installed almost anywhere in the interior. “This enables a calm and tidy interior design, into which a wealth of new functions can be integrated at the same time—without overwhelming the occupants,” says Lüders.

Disturbing light reflections, for example from low-lying sun, are also to be reduced. Even in the activated state, the display should fit seamlessly—a special backlighting makes the display content appear in the ideal brightness and image sharpness in any light situation. According to Continental, the introduction of the ShyTech display is planned for the year 2023.
