Comparison: Mercedes eActros 600 versus Overhead Line Truck

Technology comparison in the Northern Black Forest: The Mercedes-Benz long-distance truck drives flexibly and mobile without overhead lines on the test track – in a virtual match against an overhead line counterpart.

Recently, a battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 has been operating on the B462 in the Northern Black Forest for the logistics company Fahrner. As part of the "eWayBW" project under the leadership of the Ministry of Transport Baden-Württemberg, the near-production E-truck prototype is being used for a technology comparison alongside the overhead line trucks of another manufacturer. The eActros 600 transports paper products over the approximately 18 km route from the paper mills in Gernsbach-Obertsrot to Fahrner's logistics site in Kuppenheim, covering around 220 km daily. The eActros 600 is charged overnight at a charging station that was installed at Fahrner's depot for the duration of the project.

Daimler Truck itself does not plan overhead line trucks. The manufacturer relies on battery and hydrogen in its vehicle strategy, thus employing flexibly deployable locally CO2-neutral drive technologies.

Martin Daum, CEO of Daimler Truck AG: "The eActros 600, which is also being used for the technology comparison with the overhead line, is our first battery-electric truck for long-distance transport. Since sales started at the end of last year, we have already received over 1,000 firm orders."

Daimler Truck has been independently testing various generations of the battery-electric eActros - from the first prototype to the production version of the distribution traffic variant eActros 300 - on the B462 with the logistics company Logistik Schmitt since 2019, independently of "eWayBW".

The battery capacity of over 600 kWh – hence the designation 600 – as well as a new specially efficient electric drive axle of in-house development enable the electric truck to have a range of up to 500 km without intermediate charging. Thus, the eActros 600 can theoretically cover well over 1,000 km in a day. Intermediate charging during legally mandated driver breaks – even without megawatt charging (MCS) – makes this possible.

Future Megawatt Charging

The eActros 600 is expected to enable megawatt charging in addition to CCS charging with up to 400 kW. In April of this year, developers from Mercedes-Benz Trucks successfully charged a prototype of the eActros 600 for the first time at a charging station with a power of 1 MW at the company's own development and testing center in Wörth am Rhein. Customers can order a pre-installation for MCS. As soon as the MCS technology is available and standardized across manufacturers, it should be retrofittable for these models of the eActros 600. The batteries can be charged at an appropriate charging station with about 1 MW power from 20 to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.

The start of series production is scheduled for the end of 2024. The eActros 600 will be produced from the beginning as a tractor unit as well as a flatbed chassis variant.
