Coast2Coast: Kia EV9 meets Navistar

As we turned into the festival grounds for Veggifest, we only had the choice between Navistar streets: Navistar Drive or Navistar Circle. In fact, Traton subsidiary's demo fleet had to share its space with the Veggifest visitors between August 10 and 11, 2024. We took a look at the electric trucks!

What a coincidence! When the author was still writing about trucks, he resolved to visit the Navistar site during a visit to Chicago. It is located right behind the event venue! So he saddled up the EV9 and drove down Warrenville Road to the main entrance, where the entire Navistar program, including the International Scout, was waiting!

Of course, the Traton (and thus also Volkswagen Group) subsidiary ensures a relatively high VW density in the parking lot, which still has to do without charging facilities.

The main electric workhorse is supposed to be the distribution eMV, which ranges from about 13 to 16.5 tons of gross weight and is featured as a box truck in the demo fleet. In the hall, it is set up as a very large workshop vehicle, making its use clear: Regional, although in the expanses of the USA, triple-digit mileage per day can quickly accumulate!

The EV9 looks just right in front of the futuristic Navistar headquarters, and it will be exciting to see in what form the future (electric?) International Scout will compete against it. It is already clear that it will play more on the retro card, while the EV9 – no, it's no longer the umpteenth large SUV in a pleasing design that Ford, GM, and VW have now copied to the point of unrecognizability – but rather the EV9 will always stand out on its own – even in front of the Navistar building!

What does that mean?

American truck manufacturers also have electric vehicles in the pipeline. Which makes a lot of sense here, because: The engines are ALWAYS kept running: In winter, so it doesn't get too cold, in summer, so it doesn't get too hot... also very common with cars! The fuel waste is hard for Europeans to grasp - it's much easier electrically. Electricity is quiet and at least more efficient!
