The California-based start-up CityFreighter, developer of a modular electric delivery vehicle for the “last mile,” has announced a strategic partnership with Aachen's PEM Motion. The German consulting company, specializing in the industrialization of mobility solutions, will assist with a team of engineers, developers, and business experts in electric drives and manufacturing logistics to expand business operations in the United States and Europe. The team at PEM Motion includes Professor Achim Kampker, who played a key role in the development of the delivery van as CEO of StreetScooter. This van is now used by Deutsche Post DHL Group, the world’s leading logistics company, and forms, with around 18,000 vehicles in Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan, one of the largest commercial electric fleets in the world.

"PEM Motion is known for its engineering talent, innovative entrepreneurship, and expertise in electric vehicle manufacturing," explains CityFreighter founder and president Michael Schoening.

He sees in it the right partner to develop a “customer-centric mobility model” and aims for nothing less than to “capture the last-mile market.” The goal is to revolutionize urban logistics and last-mile delivery through direct collaboration with customers. Highly specialized trucks and an integrated range of logistics services are to be developed. The company further states that all aspects that contribute to electrification and reduction of total operating costs will be provided. A new strategic approach is to assist in this.

"Unlike traditional vehicle manufacturers who focus on mass production of standard trucks from the outset, CityFreighter will collaborate with strategic partners and contract manufacturers. This makes it possible to offer even significantly lower quantities at optimal prices while remaining profitable," believes the provider founded by Schoening in 2018.

They will use the knowledge of the German and North American markets to revitalize the concept of CityFreighter, just as they did with StreetScooter, explained Prof. Achim Kampker, Partner at PEM Motion.

"We are experienced developers of electric vehicles and have worked with many customers to find cost-effective and practical ways to build a company," Kampker continued to advertise.

The manufacturer expects that series production of the CF1 model, an emission-free Class 3 delivery van, will begin in the third quarter of 2023. They aim to be profitable by 2024 and to reach a volume of 30,000 vehicles by 2027. The provider recently unveiled a beta version of the CF1 model at the Advanced Clean Technology Expo in Long Beach, California, in August 2021. The CF1 features a low-floor skateboard chassis reportedly with best-in-class payload and user-oriented workspace concept. Its lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 86 kWh offers a range of 150 miles with heat pump-based thermal management. The CF1 is also supposed to be equipped with numerous safety features and ADAS functions as well as stability control.
