Citroën C5 Aircross: New 48V Hybrid with More E-Power

The brand with the double chevron introduces a new drive for the C5 Aircross: a 136 hp gasoline engine, coupled with a 48V battery and a 21 kW electric motor promise more driving dynamics with lower emissions and consumption.

Thanks to the 48V hybrid technology, partial or fully electric driving times are optimized, resulting in greater driving comfort. With CO2 emissions of 129 g/km according to WLTP1, the CO2 output of the C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 is reduced by 15 percent compared to the non-electrified petrol engine with similar characteristics and by almost 12 percent compared to the equivalent diesel. The new hybrid completes the electrified range of the C5 Aircross, which also includes the Plug-in Hybrid 180 and the Plug-in Hybrid 225. The new technology further advances Citroën's electrification strategy.

Combustion Engine Optimized for Hybrid Technology

A specially developed 1.2 PureTech gasoline engine of the new generation (40 percent of the components are new), with 3 cylinders and 1199 cm, delivers 136 HP (100 kW) at 5500 rpm and a torque of 230 Nm at 1750 rpm. The engine complies with the Euro 6.4 standard and operates on the Miller cycle, leading to improved thermal efficiency. The new electrified 6-speed dual-clutch transmission without torque interruption has also been specially developed for hybrid systems. The shift times are shorter, enhancing driving comfort.

Electric Motor with 21 kW

The permanent magnet synchronous electric motor develops an output of 21 kW (28 HP) and a torque of 55 Nm. It enables the C5 Aircross to be driven purely electrically under low torque demands, at low speeds, during maneuvers or deceleration, and supports the gasoline engine during start-up. When decelerating, it acts as a generator to charge the battery, which simultaneously reduces brake wear. The 48-volt lithium-ion battery is installed under the left front seat, so the trunk and interior space are not restricted.

Additionally, thanks to a voltage converter, part of the electricity generated by the 48-volt electric motor is converted into 12-volt electricity to power the vehicle's devices. This way, two separate electrical systems can exist side by side.

More economical, especially in the city

With the new hybrid engine, Citroën introduces an electrified alternative that offers the comfort of purely electric driving, saves fuel, and reduces CO2 emissions. The 48V hybrid technology optimizes the performance and fuel consumption of the C5 Aircross, saving an average of 1 liter/100 km2 (i.e., 15 percent) compared to the PureTech 130 EAT8 petrol engine. In urban traffic, this engine is very efficient with an average fuel saving of almost 30 percent.

The technology also has a positive impact on CO2 emissions: They can be reduced by up to 15 percent (20 g) compared to the PureTech 130 Stop&Start EAT8 petrol engine.

What does that mean?

The new model is not yet available for order on the Citroën website, and the prices are also not yet known. Especially for drivers who frequently drive short distances and in urban traffic, the new hybrid is an efficient and comfortable alternative.
