CES 2024: Here and Bosch optimize PPC in the Mercedes Actros

The predictive cruise control PPC from Daimler Truck is based on the Here ADAS Map with highly precise information about the route. The UniMap also integrates vehicle sensors and additional data sources, significantly reducing consumption in both diesel and electric trucks.

The cartography and telematics specialist Here Technologies has presented its collaboration with Bosch and Daimler Truck on the so-called Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) from Daimler Truck at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. The system is a predictive cruise control and transmission control system for commercial vehicles. Equipped with the Here ADAS Map and Bosch Electronic Horizon Software, the system takes into account road topography, curve trajectories, inclines, intersections, traffic signs, speed limits (including specific rules for trucks), as well as traffic regulations. By seamlessly integrating this information, the system reduces unnecessary braking, acceleration, and shifting to ensure more relaxed driving and lower fuel and energy consumption, according to the provider.

System functions in city, rural, and highway environments

With the ADAS Map, the position of a vehicle can be precisely determined on the road to define an electronic horizon, to which the driving style then automatically adapts. The map provides the vehicle system with information to plan and time shifting operations in advance and to adjust the vehicle's speed predictively. The system works on highways and in urban routes. For commercial vehicles with internal combustion engines, it can reduce fuel consumption by up to five percent, resulting in lower CO₂ emissions. However, the energy efficiency of electrically driven commercial vehicles also improves significantly, resulting in greater range, promises the specialist.

Linked to the on-board navigation in the eActros 600

The PCC system can also be directly linked to the on-board navigation system as demonstrated in the recently introduced eActros 600. In this case, the system considers the route calculated by the navigation system to better recognize the situation on the upcoming stretch. This is enabled by UniMap, the new cartography technology from HERE. UniMap combines standard maps (SD), high-resolution maps (HD), and ADAS map data into a single, semantically consistent digital representation of the world, according to the provider. This allows the PPC system to reconcile waypoints from navigation with the ADAS map.

AI Also Helps Here

By using artificial intelligence (AI), UniMap automates the processing of vast amounts of data from various sources. These include vehicle sensors, connected devices, satellites, and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). Changes captured in the physical world make their way into the map within 24 hours, according to the provider. This ensures the map's up-to-date status and quality.

"The system was extensively tested before it came to market and will continue to be kept up to date in the future. Bosch is further developing Electronic Horizon to ensure it will still be available in the next ten years. In the future, the function will check if the information in the map still corresponds to the actual conditions on the road," announced Dirk Paetzold, Head of Commercial Vehicles – Cockpit Technologies at Bosch.

Achieving overarching societal sustainability goals requires collaboration. The cooperation with Bosch and Daimler Truck on Predictive Powertrain Control is an example of leveraging partner strengths to create a "solution with real impact for our world today," promoted Leen Balcaen, Vice President of Product Management SD and HD Maps at Here Technologies.

"Predictive Powertrain Control not only helps to substantially reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions, but it also lowers the stress level for drivers, enhancing safety," said the Here specialist.
