The Swedish e-motorcycle specialist Cake officially presented its e-cargo bike at CES 2023 in Las Vegas. The Åik model targets both commercial users who "rely on two-wheelers for their livelihood," as they say, and demanding private users. The manufacturer defines the model not only as an e-bike but also as a utility vehicle, achieving an impressive range of up to 224 miles or 360 kilometers thanks to a triple-mountable 750 Wh battery and a total weight of 200 kilograms. The 5.2-kilogram batteries, similar to those used in e-cars, can also be tapped for external power consumers via an outlet. The batteries are designed to charge to 80 percent in two hours and to 100 percent in three hours.

Robust optics are designed to deliver on their promise

Like the related Ösa e-motorcycle, which was recently presented in the context of a city logistics cooperation with the start-up Volta Trucks, the Åik is built on a modular step-through 6051 aluminum frame. Customers can equip the bike with two luggage racks, a "long tail" at the back capable of carrying 60 kilograms, bags, trailers, baskets, passenger seats to adapt it to the respective task. The handlebars and saddle are adjustable for rider heights ranging from 150 to 195 cm. Naturally, a sturdy stand ensures secure parking even when loaded. Rearview mirrors and a lighting package with a brake light function for the Tektro Auriga disc brakes on the robust 20-inch tires are also available.

Support for the 35-kilogram (1 battery), up to 25 km/h fast robust pedelec is provided by a 100 Nm strong, self-developed BLDC bottom bracket motor with 250 watts (500 watts peak). A low-maintenance toothed belt drives the continuously variable Enviolo Extreme CVP hub gear, which can also be operated while stationary and is optimized for cargo bike use. There are three driving modes and a walking assist for maneuvering.

The price is confident at 6,500 euros, but not too high for the commercial bike category. The Medium Work Package costs 820 euros, the Large Work Package 2,670 euros, an additional battery 780 euros. The e-bike is expected to be available for lease from 180 euros per month. Connectivity such as GPS tracking and theft protection is provided by the usual Comodule cooperation, as seen with motorcycles. The smartphone including app is connected via Bluetooth, with further functionalities accessible via an API interface. Optionally, there is also a USB-C port. The 20-inch wheels are also secured, mechanically in this case. Further accessories are expected to be available throughout the year.

A commercial vehicle, not an e-bike!

With the development of a transport solution that does not require a special license for operation, a gap in its :work series has been closed, which includes the E-Enduro Kalk, the Makka, and the Ösa, all robustly built e-motorcycles. The latest member of the product family is thus intended to blur the boundaries between lightweight electric motorcycles and commercial e-bikes. Those who normally rely on motorized transportation can thus access networks of bike paths and trails that are off-limits to motorcycles and cars, the provider advertises. It also makes it easier to find a parking spot.

"With the inclusion of the Åik in the :work series, we now offer a complete range of electric two-wheelers for any company that needs a transport solution. Our range is optimized for trade needs, from the fastest delivery in the city to surveillance tasks in the backcountry," advertises Cake founder and CEO Stefan Ytterborn.
